Under Section 1 of the Appendix of the General Education Program in Mathematics issued with Circular 32/2018/TT-BGDDT, which specifies the two educational phases in the 3rd-grade Mathematics curriculum as follows:
- Basic Education Phase: Mathematics helps students systematically understand the most necessary mathematical concepts, principles, and rules for everyone, forming a foundation for further study or application in everyday life.
- Career-oriented Education Phase: Mathematics provides students with a relatively comprehensive view of mathematics, understanding its role and applications in practical life, and the careers related to mathematics, helping students orient their career paths and enabling them to independently explore math-related issues throughout their lives. Besides the core educational content, each academic year, students (especially those oriented towards natural sciences and technology) are offered a selection of study topics to enhance Mathematics knowledge, and skills in applying Mathematics knowledge to real, and meet personal interests, needs, and career orientations.
The Mathematics curriculum in both educational phases has a linear structure combined with a "spiral concentric" approach (concentric, expanding, and gradually elevating), revolving around and integrating three knowledge streams: Numbers, Algebra and some elements of Calculus; Geometry, and Measurement; Statistics and Probability.

- Encourage the use of audio-visual aids and modern technical means to support the teaching process, while also valuing traditional means. Where conditions permit, teachers should guide students in searching for information and materials on reputable educational websites or television programs to expand their understanding and self-learning abilities.
- Enhance self-made teaching equipment: Besides the minimal teaching equipment specified in the list issued by the Ministry of Education and Training, it is necessary to mobilize initiatives and creativity from students, teachers, and parents in harnessing, designing, and using self-made teaching tools.
- Flexibly combine different types of teaching equipment: Each type of equipment has certain advantages and limitations, so depending on the lesson content and teaching method, a combination of different types of teaching equipment can be used, and coordinated in a reasonable, scientific, and lively manner.
