Under the General Education Program in Literature issued in conjunction with Circular 32/2018/TT-BGDDT, the selection of texts for the 4th-grade Vietnamese language curriculum is as follows:
- Based on the text selection criteria (stated in Section V) and text selection requirements (stated in Section VIII), the program constructs a list of suggested texts (materials) for each grade.
This list is not exhaustive of all class materials but serves as illustrative examples of genres, text types, topics, and suitability with student awareness and psychology, aiming to meet achievement requirements in reading, writing, speaking, and listening for each grade.
To ensure convenience and flexibility in material selection, the texts are suggested according to class groups: Grades 1, 2, and 3; Grades 4 and 5; Grades 6 and 7; Grades 8 and 9; Grades 10, 11, and 12 (Text names for all grades are alphabetically ordered A, B, C).
Textbook authors can rely on this list to select and seek additional equivalent texts in genre and difficulty for compiling, provided they meet the criteria (stated in Section V) and text selection requirements (stated in Section VIII).
- The suggested texts (materials) in this list are arranged in order of type, genre (story, poetry, drama, narrative, argumentative, informational).
The number of texts in each type, genre varies, depending on the program's achievement requirements.

Read correctly, fluently, and expressively; understand the main content of the text, primarily explicit content; initially understand implicit content such as themes and the lessons learned from the text.
At the primary level, reading requirements include reading techniques and comprehension skills. For lower grades (Grade 1 and Grade 2), focus on reading correctly at an appropriate speed and understanding the simple content of the text. For students in Grades 3, 4th-grade, and Grade 5, focus more on understanding specific content, understanding themes, and understanding lessons from the text.
From Grade 1 to Grade 3, write correctly in spelling, vocabulary, and grammar; write a few sentences and short paragraphs; in 4th grade and Grade 5, start writing short complete essays, mainly narrative, descriptive, and simple introduction essays.
Write texts recounting stories read, events witnessed or participated in, and stories imagined by students; describe familiar objects and phenomena; introduce objects and activities close to students' lives. Write paragraphs expressing students' emotions and thoughts when reading a story, a poem, when witnessing an event that evokes emotions; express opinions on a simple issue in study and life; write some types of texts such as: autobiography, note, invitation, timetable, application, ...; initially, know how to write according to a process; the writing must have three parts (introduction, body, conclusion).
Present ideas and emotions understandably; initially, know how to use appropriate gestures and tones when speaking; recount a story read or heard; know how to share, discuss one's feelings, attitudes, and thoughts on discussed topics; know how to explain an object or a simple process.
Listen and understand with an appropriate attitude and grasp the basic content; recognize the emotions of the speaker; know how to respond to what has been heard.
