CHARACTERISTICS OF THE SUBJECT
English is a compulsory subject in the general education program from grade 3 to grade 12. As one of the tool subjects in school, English not only helps students form and develop communication skills in English but also contributes to forming and developing general skills for living and working more effectively, for better learning in other subjects, and for lifelong learning.

According to Section 4 of the general education program for English issued together with Circular 32/2018/TT-BGDDT, the required outcomes regarding specific competencies for primary school students after learning English are as follows:
- After completing the English curricula at the primary level, students can achieve English proficiency Level 1 of the six-level foreign language ability framework used for Vietnam. To be specific:
+ Be able to understand and use familiar everyday expressions; and basic phrases to meet specific communication needs.
+ Be able to introduce themselves and others; can answer questions about personal details such as where they live, people they know, etc.
+ Be able to communicate simply if the other person talks slowly, clearly, and is ready to assist.”
- Through English, students gain initial knowledge about the countries, people, and cultures of some English-speaking countries and other nations worldwide; develop a positive attitude towards learning English; take pride in and value their national language and culture; foster qualities such as love, respect for oneself, friends, family, the environment, diligence, and honesty.
