What is the formula for calculating the volume of a pyramid? What is the grade at which students in Vietnam will learn to calculate the volume of a pyramid?
What is the formula for calculating the volume of a pyramid?
To calculate the volume of a pyramid, you must determine the base area and height of the pyramid before applying the formula V = (1/3) * S * h.
Students can refer to the detailed information on the formula for calculating the volume of a pyramid below:

What is the grade at which students in Vietnam will learn to calculate the volume of a pyramid?
Under Section 5 of the General Education Program for Mathematics issued together with Circular 32/2018/TT-BGDDT, the required outcomes for 11th-grade Mathematics is specified as follows:
Regular frustum pyramid and volume
- Identify regular frustum pyramids.
- Be able to calculate the volume of a regular frustum pyramid.
- Apply knowledge of regular frustum pyramids to describe some images in reality.
Therefore, according to the regulation, calculating the volume of a pyramid will be taught in the 11th-grade Mathematics curriculum.
What are the four perspectives in developing the 11th-grade Mathematics curriculum?
Under Section 2 of the General Education Program for Mathematics issued together with Circular 32/2018/TT-BGDDT, the four perspectives in developing the 11th-grade Mathematics curriculum are specified as follows:
- The Mathematics curriculum adheres to the basic regulations outlined in the overall program; it inherits and promotes the advantages of the current and previous programs, selectively absorbing the experience of curriculum construction from advanced countries worldwide, approaching the achievements of educational science, and considering Vietnam's economic and social conditions.
Additionally, the Mathematics curriculum emphasizes several perspectives:
(1) Ensure simplification, practicality, modernity
- The Mathematics curriculum ensures simplification, practicality, and modernity by reflecting the essential content required to be covered in general education schools, meeting the understanding needs of the world and the interests, and preferences of learners, and aligning with the current global approach.
The curriculum embodies the spirit of "mathematics for everyone," allowing everyone to learn Mathematics but in a manner that suits their interests and personal abilities.
- The Mathematics curriculum emphasizes application, connecting with other subjects or educational activities, particularly those aiming to implement STEM education, aligning with modern economic, scientific, social life development trends, and globally urgent issues (such as climate change, sustainable development, financial education,...).
This is further reflected through practical activities and experiences in mathematics education with various forms like conducting study topics, learning projects about mathematics, especially those that apply mathematical application in reality; organizing math games, math clubs, forums, workshops, math competitions,... creating opportunities for students to apply their knowledge, skills, and experiences creatively in reality.
(2) Ensure unity, consistency, and continuous development
The Mathematics curriculum ensures unity, consistency, and continuous development (from Grade 1 to Grade 12), including two closely-linked branches, one describing the development of core content knowledge streams, and another depicting the development of students' competencies and qualities.
At the same time, the Mathematics curriculum pays attention to the connection with the preschool education program and provides a foundation for vocational education and higher education.
(3) Ensure integration and differentiation
- The Mathematics curriculum implements intra-subject integration around three knowledge streams: Numbers, Algebra, and some Calculus elements; Geometry and Measurement; Statistics and Probability; implementing interdisciplinary integration through related content, topics, or mathematical knowledge exploited and used in other subjects such as Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Geography, Informatics, Technology, History, Art,...;
Implementing intra-subject and interdisciplinary integration through practical activities and experiences in mathematics education.
- At the same time, the Mathematics curriculum ensures differentiation requirements. For all educational levels, it embodies the spirit of teaching in the direction of individualizing learners based on ensuring that the majority of students (across all regions of the country) meet the curriculum's requirements; at the same time, it pays attention to specific targets (excelling students, students with disabilities, students in difficult circumstances, …).
For high school education levels, Mathematics has a system of in-depth study topics and learning content that helps students improve their knowledge, practice skills, and apply to solve practical issues.
(4) Ensure openness
- The Mathematics curriculum ensures unified guidance and essential core mathematical education content mandatory for students nationwide, while granting autonomy and responsibility to localities and schools in selecting, supplementing certain mathematical education content, and deploying educational plans suitable for the local, educational facility conditions.
- The Mathematics curriculum only stipulates general principles, orientations on the requirements for students' qualities and capacities, educational content, teaching methods, and educational result evaluation, without being overly detailed, creating conditions for textbook authors and teachers to proactively and creatively implement the curriculum.
- The curriculum ensures stability and the ability to develop during implementation to keep up with scientific and technological progress and real-world requirements.
