What is the starting date of the academic year 2024-2025 in Vietnam?

According to Article 1 of Decision 2045/QD-BGDDT 2024 on the Framework Plan for the 2024-2025 Academic Year for preschool, general education, and continuing education, the schedule is as follows:

Issuance of the framework plan for the 2024-2025 academic year for preschool, general education, and continuing education nationwide as follows:

1. The earliest school start date is one week before the official opening ceremony date. For first grade, the earliest start date is two weeks before the official opening ceremony date.

2. The opening ceremony will be held on September 5, 2024.

3. The first semester ends before January 18, 2025, and the academic year finishes before May 31, 2025.

4. Primary school graduation recognition and lower secondary graduation recognition must be completed before June 30, 2025.

5. Admission to first grade and other grades should be completed before July 31, 2025.

6. The high school graduation exam for 2025 is scheduled to take place on June 26 and June 27, 2025.

7. Other national examinations will be conducted according to the regulations and guidelines of the Ministry of Education and Training.

The Ministry of Education and Training stipulates that the earliest school start date nationwide for the 2024-2025 academic year is one week before the official opening ceremony date. For first grade, the earliest start date is two weeks before the official opening ceremony on September 5, 2024.

However, the actual start date may vary depending on the specific schedule issued by the People's Committees of the provinces.

Note: The above start dates apply to students in public schools.

What are rights of students in Vietnam?

The rights of students include:

*Primary School Students

According to Article 35 of the Primary School Charter issued with Circular 28/2020/TT-BGDDT, primary school students have the following rights:

(1) The Right to Education

- To receive education and training for comprehensive development, thereby maximizing their potential; to study at a school that implements the primary education curriculum conveniently located in their residential area.

- Students can choose a school or transfer to another school outside their residential area if the school can accommodate them.

- Primary school-age children returning from abroad, children of foreign workers in Vietnam, and children who have not attended school due to difficult circumstances can request to study at a primary school. The principal will organize an assessment to place them in appropriate classes.

- Disabled students are entitled to inclusive education at primary schools; they are provided with conditions to study and train; they are educated and assessed according to their individual education plans.

- Students can accelerate their studies, study at an older age than the prescribed age, repeat grades, or extend their study time.

- Physically strong and intellectually advanced students can skip grades within the education level.

The procedures for reviewing each specific case include the following steps:

Parents or guardians submit an application to the school.

The school principal forms an assessment and advisory council, including the principal or vice-principal, the school’s parent representative committee, current class teachers, teachers of senior grades, a medical staff, and the school’s Scout Master.

Based on the council’s assessment results, the principal completes the documentation and reports to the Head of the Education and Training Department for consideration and decision-making.

- Students with limited academic performance who have been mentored by teachers, parents, or guardians but still do not meet the requirements may be retained in the same grade or promoted based on the principal's decision, which is reported to the family to find appropriate educational solutions.

(2) The Right to Protection, Care, and Respect

- To receive protection, care, and respect; to be treated equally and democratically; to have legitimate rights and interests ensured; to receive full information on personal academic and training records; to be provided with adequate conditions in terms of time, facilities, hygiene, and safety for learning and training.

(3) The Right to Participate in Activities

- To engage in activities that promote individual abilities; to express opinions and personal aspirations.

(4) The Right to Scholarships and Social Policies

- To receive scholarships and social policy benefits as stipulated.

(5) Other Rights as Prescribed by Law

*Secondary School Students

According to Article 35 of the Charter for lower secondary schools, upper secondary schools, and schools with multiple levels issued by the Ministry of Education and Training in Circular 32/2020/TT-BGDDT, secondary students have the following rights:

(1) The Right to Equal Education

- To enjoy equal opportunities in accessing comprehensive education; to be provided with adequate conditions for learning in class and self-study at home; to be informed about their academic and training records; to use facilities and equipment for academic, cultural, and sports activities at the school as stipulated.

(2) The Right to Respect and Protection

- To be respected and protected, to be treated equally and democratically; to have the right to complain to the school and educational management authorities about decisions affecting them; to transfer schools when having legitimate reasons as per the current regulations; to accelerate their studies, skip grades, or study at an older age as stipulated in Article 33 of the Charter issued in Circular 32/2020/TT-BGDDT.

(3) The Right to Participate in Activities

- To join activities to develop talents in various subjects, sports, arts organized by the school if conditions allow.

(4) The Right to Scholarships and Other Allowances

- To receive scholarships or other allowances as stipulated for students under social policies, those facing life difficulties, and those with special abilities.

(5) The Right to Transfer Schools

- To transfer schools if meeting the conditions; the transfer procedure follows the regulations of the Ministry of Education and Training.

(6) Other Rights as Prescribed by Law
