What are the objectives of the 11th-grade Mathematics curriculum in Vietnam?
According to the General Education Program for Mathematics at the lower secondary education level issued with Circular 32/2018/TT-BGDDT, the specific provisions are as follows:
The Mathematics curriculum at the lower secondary education level aims to help students achieve the following main objectives:
+ Contribute to forming and developing mathematical competence with requirements to achieve: pose and answer questions while reasoning, solve problems, perform reasonable reasoning when solving problems, prove mathematical propositions that are not too complex; use mathematical models (mathematical formulas, algebraic equations, diagrams,...) to describe situations appearing in some practical problems that are not too complex; use mathematical language combined with ordinary language to express mathematical content as well as present evidence, methods, and reasoning results; present ideas and ways of using tools, resources for learning mathematics to perform a learning task or to express mathematical reasoning, proofs.
+ Possess basic mathematical knowledge and skills in:
++ Numbers and Algebra: Number system (from natural numbers to real numbers); calculation and use of calculation tools; algebraic language and symbols; transform algebraic expressions, equations, systems of equations, inequalities; use function language to describe (model) some processes and phenomena in practice.
++ Geometry and Measurement: The content of Geometry and Measurement at this level includes Visual Geometry and Plane Geometry. Visual Geometry continues to provide language, symbols, describe (at a visual level) practical objects (flat shapes, solid shapes); establish several common geometric models; calculate several geometric elements; develop spatial imagination; solve some practical problems associated with Geometry and Measurement. Plane Geometry provides knowledge and skills (at a logical reasoning level) about geometric relations and some common plane shapes (point, line, ray, segment, angle, parallel lines, triangle, quadrilateral, circle).
++ Statistics and Probability: Collect, classify, present, analyze, and process statistical data; analyze statistical data through frequency, relative frequency; recognize some simple statistical rules in practice; use statistics to understand basic concepts of experimental probability of an event and the probability of an event; recognize the significance of probability in practice.
+ Contribute to helping students have initial understanding of occupations related to Mathematics; have career orientation based on ability and interests, conditions and circumstances of themselves; orientate streams after secondary school (continue higher education, vocational education, or engage in working life).
What are the characteristics of Mathematics at the lower secondary education level in Vietnam?
According to the General Education Program for Mathematics at the lower secondary education level issued with Circular 32/2018/TT-BGDDT, the specific characteristics of 9th-grade Mathematics are as follows:
Mathematics is increasingly applied in life, and fundamental mathematical knowledge and skills have helped people solve real-life problems systematically and accurately, contributing to societal development.
Mathematics in secondary schools contributes to forming and developing core qualities, general competencies, and mathematical competence for students; develops key knowledge and skills and creates opportunities for students to experience and apply mathematics in practice; establishes connections between mathematical ideas, between Mathematics and reality, between Mathematics and other subjects and educational activities, especially with Science, Natural Science, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Technology, and Informatics to implement STEM education.
The content of Mathematics often carries logical, abstract, and generalized nature. Therefore, to comprehend and learn Mathematics, the Mathematics curriculum in schools needs to ensure a balance between "learning" knowledge and "applying" knowledge to solve specific problems.
In the process of learning and applying mathematics, students always have the opportunity to use technological tools, modern teaching equipment, especially electronic computers and handheld calculators, supporting the process of representation, exploration, knowledge discovery, and solving mathematical problems.
In the general education program, Mathematics is a compulsory subject from grade 1 to grade 12. The content of Mathematics education is divided into two stages:
- Basic education stage: Mathematics helps students systematically understand the most necessary mathematical concepts, principles, and rules for everyone, forming a foundation for further learning or everyday life use.
- Career-oriented education stage: Mathematics helps students gain a relatively general perspective on mathematics, understand the role and applications of mathematics in practice, and related careers to provide a basis for career orientation, as well as the ability to independently learn issues related to mathematics throughout life.
In addition to core educational content, each academic year, students (especially those oriented towards natural sciences and technology) can choose to study several learning modules. These modules aim to enhance knowledge in mathematics, apply mathematical knowledge in practice, and meet students' interests, needs, and career orientation.
The Mathematics curriculum in both educational stages has a linear structure combined with a "spiral concentric" approach (concentric, expansive, and progressively advanced), revolving around and integrating three knowledge strands: Numbers, Algebra and Some Analytical Elements; Geometry and Measurement; Statistics and Probability.
