When is the usual season for catching oceanic tuna in Vietnam?
The oceanic tuna-catching season in Vietnam typically begins in the lunar month of November each year. This is the time when fishermen from the central regions, particularly provinces such as Binh Dinh, Phu Yen, and Khanh Hoa, embark on long sea journeys to hunt this precious marine resource.
Why choose this particular oceanic tuna-catching season?
Weather conditions: In the winter, the strong Northeast monsoon winds create cold sea currents, driving the tuna closer to the shore. These conditions are favorable for fishermen, making it easier to locate and catch them.
Food sources: During this season, the food sources for tuna such as flying fish and squid are abundant, attracting tuna to gather in large schools.
Oceanic tuna catching activities:
Preparing boats: Fishermen equip their boats with all necessary gear such as fishing rods, nets, buoys, and baits for the long sea journey.
Setting sail: Fishing boats depart together to find grounds rich in tuna.
Catching process: Fishermen use traditional fishing methods like hand lines, nets, or more modern techniques such as machine fishing.
Returning to shore: After the sea journey, tuna is brought to shore, sorted, and then distributed for consumption.
The economic value of oceanic tuna:
Oceanic tuna is a high-value seafood product exported to many countries worldwide. Tuna meat is rich in nutrients, possesses a delicious flavor, and is used in various specialty dishes.
Challenges faced by fishermen:
Harsh weather conditions: Turbulent seas and large waves pose challenges for fishing.
Depletion of marine resources: Over-exploitation and marine pollution are causing a depletion of the available marine resources.
Price volatility: The price of tuna varies frequently, impacting the income of fishermen.
Protection of marine resources:
To protect marine resources and sustainably develop the fishing industry, measures such as the following are needed:
Strict management of exploitation: Clearly define the timeframe, location, and methods for fishing.
Marine environment protection: Minimize pollution, and protect coral reefs, and other marine ecosystems.
Aquaculture development: Reduce the pressure on natural marine resources.
