Under Article 3 of the High School Graduation Exam Regulations issued together with Circular 24/2024/TT-BGDDT, the exam subjects are regulated as follows:
The exam consists of 3 sessions:
- 1 session for the Literature paper,
- 1 session for the Mathematics paper,
- 1 session for the elective paper consisting of 2 subjects chosen from: Physics, Chemistry, Biology, History, Geography, Economic and Legal Education, Informatics, Industrial Technology, Agricultural Technology, Foreign Language (English, Russian, French, Chinese, German, Japanese, and Korean).
Additionally, under Clause 2, Article 20 of the High School Graduation Exam Regulations issued by the Ministry of Education and Training with Circular 24/2024/TT-BGDDT, the subject registration is regulated as follows:
- For high school graduation assessment: Candidates must register for papers in Literature, Mathematics, and one elective paper consisting of 2 subjects chosen from: Physics, Chemistry, Biology, History, Geography, Economics and Legal Education, Informatics, Industrial Technology, Agricultural Technology, Foreign Language.
Candidates choose 2 subjects from the elective paper among those studied in grade 12. Candidates can register for a different Foreign Language than the one studied in the upper secondary school;
- Candidates prescribed at points c, d, clause 1, Article 19 of the High School Graduation Exam Regulations issued together with Circular 24/2024/TT-BGDDT only register for papers according to their aspirations. Particularly for the elective paper, candidates can choose a maximum of 2 subjects.

What are the regulations on eligible candidates and eligibility requirements for taking the high school graduation exam from 2025 in Vietnam?
Under Article 19 of the Regulation on the high school graduation exam issued together with Circular 24/2024/TT-BGDDT (effective from February 8, 2025), the eligible candidates and eligibility requirements for taking the high school graduation exam from 2025 in Vietnam are stipulated as follows:
1. Eligible candidates include:
- Individuals who have completed the General Education/Continuing Education program in the year of the exam;
- Individuals who have completed the General Education/Continuing Education program but have not graduated in previous years;
- Individuals who already hold a High School Diploma but retake the exam to use the results for enrollment registration;
- Individuals who already hold a Post-secondary Diploma who retake the exam to use the results for enrollment registration.
2. Eligibility requirements for taking the exam
- Eligible candidates must register and submit all required documents on time;
- Candidates under point d, clause 1 of this Article must ensure they have studied and met the requirements for sufficient high school cultural knowledge volume as stipulated by the Education Law 2019 and current guidance documents from the Ministry of Education and Training.

- Exam Registration Form;
- Valid certificates for priority/encouragement policies (if any);
- 4x6-sized photos taken in the style of ID/citizen ID card, taken no more than 06 months before submitting the application;
- Copies of the academic records at the upper secondary level (for candidates under point b, clause 1, Article 19 of the High School Graduation Exam Regulations issued together with Circular 24/2024/TT-BGDDT);
- A copy of the High School Diploma (for candidates under point c, clause 1, Article 19 of the High School Graduation Exam Regulations issued together with Circular 24/2024/TT-BGDDT);
- A copy of the Post-secondary Diploma, along with a copy of the Academic Record or transcript for cultural subjects at the upper secondary level as stipulated by the Education Law and current guidance documents from the Ministry of Education and Training (for candidates under point d, clause 1, Article 19 of Circular 24/2024/TT-BGDDT);
- Confirmation of reserved scores (if any) from the Principal of the high school where the candidate took the exam in the previous year or from the Department of Education and Training if the candidate took the exam in another province.
In Vietnam, what are the cases where the retention of the High School Graduation Exam scores in 2025 is allowed?
Under Article 41 of the Regulation on High School Graduation Exam issued with Circular 24/2024/TT-BGDDT...Download, the regulations regarding the retention of exam scores are as follows:
(1) Candidates who have taken all prescribed exam subjects but have not graduated high school and have not been disciplined with exam result cancellation can have their scores retained for high school graduation assessment in the immediately following exam year. The subjects with scores retained must have a score of 5.0 or above.
(2) Candidates with retained scores as specified in (1), to be eligible for high school graduation assessment in the immediately following exam year, must register for the exam as specified at point a, clause 2, Article 20 of the High School Graduation Exam Regulation issued with Circular 24/2024/TT-BGDDT (including the retained subject) and only take papers of subjects without retained scores.
Note: In cases where candidates retake a paper with retained scores, the exam results must be used for graduation assessment.
