What are the guidelines for assessing the role of Quang Trung in the Tay Son movement?

With outstanding military talent, sharp political vision, and intense patriotism, Quang Trung not only played an important leadership role but also elevated the Tay Son movement to its peak, contributing to changing the historical landscape of the country.

Below are guidelines for assessing the role of Quang Trung in the Tay Son movement:

1. Leadership of the Tay Son Movement, Laying the Foundation for National Unification

- Nguyen Hue and his Tay Son brothers led the peasant movement to overthrow the corrupt feudal governments (the Nguyen lords in the South, the Trinh lords in the North, and the Le dynasty).

- He played a crucial role in dismantling the country's divided state, creating a premise for national unification and subsequent construction.

2. Commander of Resistance Wars to Protect National Independence

- Victory over Siamese troops (1785): Nguyen Hue commanded the Tay Son army to defeat 50,000 Siamese troops in the Battle of Rach Gam - Xoai Mut, protecting the Southern region from invasion.

- Victory over Qing troops (1789): Under the leadership of Quang Trung, the Tay Son army defeated 290,000 Qing troops in the Ngoc Hoi - Dong Da campaign, maintaining national independence and asserting the strength of the Vietnamese.

3. Establishing and Consolidating the New Dynasty

- After ascending the throne (1788), Quang Trung chose Phu Xuan (Hue) as the capital, marking the shift of the political center to Central Vietnam.

- He enacted numerous progressive reform policies in economic, political, military, and cultural fields to stabilize the country after a long period of turmoil:

- Economy: Encouraging agriculture, reducing taxes, redistributing land to peasants, and developing handicrafts and trade.

- Military: Strengthening national defense, building a powerful military force ready to counter external invasions.

- Education and Culture: Promoting education using the Nom script, encouraging literary and artistic creativity, and preserving and developing national culture.

4. Great Ambitions for a Strong Nation

- Quang Trung had bold plans to develop the country, such as administrative reforms, transforming the management system, and building an egalitarian society.

- He also intended to engage with neighboring countries, particularly the Qing dynasty, to maintain lasting peace and stability.

- However, these ambitions were not fully realized due to his sudden death in 1792 at the age of 40.

5. Historical Significance and Legacy

- Quang Trung - Nguyen Hue was not only an outstanding military leader but also a visionary reformer.

- His great victories contributed to safeguarding national independence, restoring and strengthening national pride in the context of external pressures.

- Although his reign was short, he left an indelible mark on Vietnamese history, serving as a shining example of patriotism, resilient spirit, and exceptional talent.

Conclusion

Quang Trung - Nguyen Hue was an extraordinary historical figure who led the Tay Son movement to its peak and protected national independence. His role extended beyond unifying the country and defeating invaders to embodying progressive reforms aimed at building a prosperous and civilized nation. Despite his unfinished career, Quang Trung's stature and spirit have become a great symbol in Vietnam's national history.
