1. Preparation

The excerpt "The Drums at Ancient City" is a part of the "Romance of the Three Kingdoms" by Luo Guanzhong. This work recounts the events of the Three Kingdoms period, when the three states Wei, Shu, and Wu vied for power, featuring standout characters such as Liu Bei, Guan Yu, Zhang Fei, and Cao Cao.

Luo Guanzhong was a renowned Chinese novelist and author, living at the end of the Southern Song and the beginning of the Ming dynasty. He is known for his work "Romance of the Three Kingdoms," which has had a profound influence on Chinese literature and culture.

2. Reading Comprehension

Question 1: What are Zhang Fei's and Guan Yu's attitudes?

Zhang Fei demonstrates an attitude of anger, suspicion, and pain towards Guan Yu. He believes that Guan Yu betrayed him because the idea of Guan Yu taking refuge with Cao Cao is unacceptable. Zhang Fei is very hot-tempered and decides to attack Guan Yu upon their reunion.

Guan Yu, though suspected and criticized, remains calm, patient, and tries to explain his situation. Guan Yu consistently attempts to clarify the misunderstanding, proving his loyalty and explaining his unavoidable situation in needing to lean on Cao Cao.

Question 2: Why does Guan Yu mention the "peach garden oath"?

The "peach garden oath" symbolizes the brotherly bond among Guan Yu, Zhang Fei, and Liu Bei. Previously, the three had sworn brotherhood in the peach garden, demonstrating loyal friendship that would not fail no matter the circumstances. Guan Yu recalls the "peach garden oath" to emphasize that their brotherly relationship cannot easily be broken, despite misunderstandings, because they pledged deep commitment to each other.

Question 3: Why is the form of address between Zhang Fei and Guan Yu conflicting?

The conflicting form of address between Zhang Fei and Guan Yu stems from their attitudes and emotions. Zhang Fei harshly calls Guan Yu in an angry manner, while Guan Yu addresses Zhang Fei as "dear brother," showing respect and affection despite misunderstanding. This reflects Zhang Fei's anger because he believed Guan Yu betrayed him, while Guan Yu remains patient and brotherly.

Question 4: Are you surprised by this situation? Why?

I am not overly surprised by this situation because it is a common scenario in historical or classical literature works, especially in "Romance of the Three Kingdoms." This situation clearly reflects the complex relationships between characters, misunderstandings, and painful events among brothers. It highlights loyalty, patience, and sacrifice of the characters, especially Guan Yu.

Question 5: How are Guan Yu's courage and talents demonstrated?

Guan Yu's courage is shown through his fearlessness despite being misunderstood and attacked. He maintains calmness, refuses to get angry, and seeks ways to explain everything. Guan Yu is not only strong but also wise and brave when facing difficult situations.

Guan Yu's talents are demonstrated through his combat skills, evident when he easily killed General Sai Yang in just a drumbeat. He possesses exceptional martial skills, especially in wielding the dragon saber.

3. Answer the End-of-Lesson Questions

Question 1: List the main events of the excerpt "The Drums at Ancient City". What led to Zhang Fei's misunderstanding of Guan Yu?

- Main events:

+ Guan Yu and Zhou Cang arrive in Ru Nan and, during the journey, meet a local who talks about Zhang Fei occupying the Ancient City, recruiting cavalry and forming a strong military base.

+ Guan Yu is happy to find Zhang Fei in the Ancient City after being separated for a long time. He immediately sends Sun Qian into the city to convey the news and ask Zhang Fei to welcome the two ladies.

+ Zhang Fei, upon hearing the news, becomes very angry, believing that Guan Yu betrayed his brothers, followed Cao Cao, and was disloyal to their cause. He attacks Guan Yu upon their reunion.

+ Guan Yu explains that relying on Cao Cao was out of necessity and not betrayal to Zhang Fei. The two ladies later clarify things, helping Zhang Fei understand the truth.

+ Zhang Fei acknowledges and then invites the two ladies into the city.

- Reasons for Zhang Fei's misunderstanding:

+ Zhang Fei perceived that Guan Yu abandoned Liu Bei to work under Cao Cao, receiving titles, hence he thought Guan Yu betrayed them. Zhang Fei believed Guan Yu had been disloyal to the promise made in the peach garden that the three brothers swore.

Question 2: How has the narrator portrayed the personalities of Zhang Fei and Guan Yu through details, events, and situations?

- The personality of Zhang Fei:

+ Hot-tempered and quick to anger: Zhang Fei displays anger and hastiness when he reunites with Guan Yu. He does not greet him immediately but attacks because he thinks Guan Yu betrayed him. This shows Zhang Fei's hot-tempered, impatient, and easily emotional nature.

+ Loyalty and integrity: However, when he comprehends the situation and is explained by the ladies, Zhang Fei expresses remorse and recognizes Guan Yu's loyalty, which helps restore trust and the relationship with Guan Yu.

- The personality of Guan Yu:

+ Patient and calm: Guan Yu, although misunderstood and attacked, maintains a calm and patient demeanor and attempts to explain to Zhang Fei. He does not become angry but peacefully clarifies his reasons.

+ Loyalty and sincerity: Guan Yu steadfastly retains the brotherly affection, despite rebuke or misunderstanding. He continues to explain and persuade Zhang Fei with his words and actions.

Question 3: Analyze and evaluate the significance of the story recounted in the text "The Drums at Ancient City".

- Significance of brotherhood: The story illustrates the special relationship between the three brothers Liu Bei, Guan Yu, and Zhang Fei. Despite misunderstandings and conflicts, their brotherly affection never fades. The story shows that in any circumstance, steadfast loyalty and brotherly love will help them overcome all challenges and difficulties. This relationship is one of the noble values in "Romance of the Three Kingdoms."

- Significance of character and virtue: Through the story, readers witness Guan Yu's calmness and patience and Zhang Fei's hot temper and sensitivity. However, through this situation, Zhang Fei also displays fairness when he realizes the truth and is willing to amend mistakes, while Guan Yu reveals loyalty and sacrifice as he endures misunderstanding to protect brotherly love.

- The value of loyalty and understanding: The story also exalts the value of loyalty and understanding among individuals, especially in complex situations. When misunderstandings occur, rather than acting rashly, we need patience, explanation, and truth-seeking to preserve affection and good relationships.

Question 4: Write a paragraph (about 6-8 lines) comparing the characteristics of the two characters Zhang Fei and Guan Yu as depicted in the excerpt "The Drums at Ancient City".

In the excerpt "The Drums at Ancient City" the characteristics of Zhang Fei and Guan Yu are distinctly portrayed through their actions and words. Zhang Fei is shown as hot-tempered and quick to anger; upon reuniting with Guan Yu, he attacks immediately because he believes Guan Yu has been disloyal. Zhang Fei's anger results from his impatience and lack of understanding of his brother's circumstances. Conversely, Guan Yu displays calmness, patience, and always seeks to explain, even when attacked and misunderstood. Guan Yu exhibits calmness, loyalty to his brothers, and unwavering affection, even when faced with difficulties. Through this, we see Zhang Fei as hot-tempered and less patient, while Guan Yu is calm, persistent, and full of loyalty.
