Poem: I Love My Sister

Author: Pham Ho

I love my sister

She giggles

Every time I joke

She gets happy, she likes it.

When I’m away for long

She hopes, she recalls

Hides behind trees

Rushing out with a tight hug.

Her eyes black and bright

Clear as water

Her mouth rosy fresh

Speaks like a nightingale.

She loves to draw

Draws rabbits in pairs

She fears a lone rabbit

Has no friend to play with.

Orchid and jasmine

She picks and wears in her hair

The fragrance follows her

Across the yard and garden.

There, that’s her voice!

Returning from school

Catching butterflies with friends

Laughing under the bamboo row….

Poem: Sisters

Author: Luu Trong Lu

You stepped in here

Today’s wind is cold,

Sister lit the coals,

For you to sit by.

Today sister gets married

Staying forever in Giang Dong

Under white clouds

Across many rivers.

Silk quilts, cotton pillows

Sister brings with her husband,

Tomorrow her room will be cold

Please light a candle.

Who is sister’s husband

Sister doesn’t know yet!

Wait until tomorrow

Peek through the lattice.

Why are you sobbing

What is your sorrow?

Today you cry for sister

Who will cry for you tomorrow?

You bring in the firewood

The flame burns brighter,

Pour a cup of rose wine

To warm the heart.

Drink another cup

Celebrate the farewell

Bidding joy goodbye

Bidding youth farewell.

Poem: Being a Brother

Author: Phan Thi Thanh Nhan

Being a brother is tough

It’s not a joke

With little sister

Must be mature

When sister cries

Brother must comfort

If sister falls

Pick her up gently

Mom gives cakes

Share more with sister

Beautiful toys

Yield to her as well

Being a brother is tough

But brings joy

Whoever loves the little one

Can do it.

Poem: Sisters

Author: Tran Dac Trung

Little Sleep, sleep well

So sister can lay the mat, drop the curtain for you.

The broom dutifully sweeps the porch clean,

The marble waits alert by the wall.

The chickens, stay in the garden,

The rows of vegetables mother newly planted at the gable.

Mother returns, forehead dripping with sweat,

Seeing the two little ones sharing the lullaby.

Poem: Missing My Sister

Author: Nguyen Tien Hau

My sister accustomed to toil

In her childhood, burdened with family worries

She was the eldest daughter

With five younger brothers under her care

Parents laboring in the field

Face the dirt - Bent back supporting the sky

The siblings clinging to sister alone

She hums lullabies like a mother

Bamboo cradle creaks by the porch

The little ones not yet grown have lost their father

Sister dreams of being a banyan tree

Caring for aging parents

After overcoming parenting

Muddied and dirtied, seeing children grow

Two children excelled in studies

The girl became a teacher - The boy a star cap

The joy in her life dreamt is fulfilled

The labor she nurtured has borne fruit

The boat just docked across the river

My sister fell ill, lay on the field

Leaving behind all the love

To the aging mother - To small nieces and nephews - To the affectionate homeland

Leaving responsibilities to her husband

The withering old mother remembers her daughters

The familiar lane has become a path worn

Her siblings wait for sister's return... Oh sister...

Sister departs to distant lands

Where is the sight of mother waiting...

The grave with blooming daisies and chrysanthemums

Incense smoke reminds me of my beloved sister…

Poem: Kin of One Family

Author: Phuong Vuong

Under the old roof, we grew up

Brothers and sisters, cherishing each other

Since the days of sharing porridge and vegetables

Parents turned gray for us.

Growing up, each cared for their own life

Setting up families, living apart

Always busy forgetting affection

The love of one family, cherishing each other.

Parents lived their lives for young children

Educating them for success, making them proud

Now parents are old and frail

Ancestors await to welcome parents.

Before departing, parents advise

Brothers and sisters, harmony among yourselves

Do not let greed divide the family

Blood flows, love deepens, cherish each other.

Poem: My Sister

Author: Bach Tung Vu

Afternoon rain drizzles on the river

The siblings eagerly waiting for sister to return

Sister still busy with labor

Working to earn money for rice to take home for siblings

One's hungry for milk

Another's nose is runny and messy

Since the day parents passed

Sister alone plowed to nurture siblings

The crane scurries night and day

For the naive siblings, earning a few more coins

On stormy, windy days

Paddling and steering across the river home

O lullaby!

The wind swings the cluster of eggplants

My sister at fourteen, is already my mother

A band of orphaned siblings

If sister wasn’t there, who would care

Even though meals are scant

Sister’s toil thins her frame

In her still maiden years

Proposals came but sister was still nurturing siblings

Matchmakers came to view

Sister declined, returning their engagements

Sister continues laboring in the deep fields

A band of immature siblings, she won’t marry

In the chilling winter days

Warm clothes are insufficient, blankets aren’t whole

Pots and kitchens cold

Sister is still on the wharf, in worn-out garb

The boat moored alone

No customers in the afternoon because of the storm returning

O vow! Mountain keeps its promise to the sea

Why don’t you leave the harbor and return, sister dear

In the rainstorm's turmoil

Alone on the empty boat, sister sheds sorrowful tears

Father, where are you?

Mother, I remember your lullabies!
