2nd mid-semester question papers for 10th-grade Literature

Subject: 10th-grade Literature

Duration: 90 minutes

(Question paper No. 1)

PART I – READING COMPREHENSION (3.0 points)

Read the following excerpt and fulfill the requirements:

As the years go by, you will realize that dreams never disappear. Even dreams... during school years – the most unstable period. If you don't pursue it, it will surely come back at some point, troubling you, even tormenting you every day.

If so, why not think about it now?

Living a life is like painting a picture. If you think long about what you want to paint, if you anticipate as many colors as you want to show, if you are sure about the material you use, the picture in reality will be more like your imagination. Otherwise, it may be in colors that others like, a picture that others approve, not you.

Don't let anyone steal your dream. Find out what your burning desire is, it's deep inside your heart, like a volcano waiting to be awakened...

(According to Pham Lu An, If You Know a Hundred Years is Finite, NXB Hoi Nha Van, 2012, pp. 43-44)

Question 1 (0.5 points): Identify the main mode of expression used in the excerpt.

Question 2 (1.0 points): Identify and state the effect of the rhetorical device used in the following sentence: “Living a life is like painting a picture”.

Question 3 (0.5 points): What is your understanding of the opinion: “Don't let anyone steal your dream”?

Question 4 (1.0 points): What is your “burning desire”? What will you do to make that dream a reality? (Answer in about 5-7 lines).

PART II – WRITING (7.0 points)

Question 1 (2.0 points): From the content of the excerpt in the Reading Comprehension section, write a paragraph (about 200 words) on the topic: Pursuing Dreams.

Question 2 (5.0 points): Perception of the word “leisure” in the poem Leisure by Nguyen Binh Khiem. From there, relate it to the following verses in Summer Scene by Nguyen Trai and comment on the beauty of the souls of the two authors:

The fish market buzzes in the fisherman's village,

Cicadas sing in the sunset tower.

If only the Shun zither could play a note,

For the people's wealth to be everywhere.

- Develop the issue into points; effectively use argumentative manipulations; tightly combine reasoning and evidence; draw a lesson of awareness and action.

+ Explanation:

++ Dreams are those passionate and intense desires for beautiful things in the future.

++ Pursuing dreams holds significant meaning for every individual's life.

+ Discussion:

++ People need to have dreams whether they are grand or small. Because dreams make life beautiful and meaningful; they help people live with purpose, ideals, motivate them to overcome difficulties and challenges, and aim for success, even creating great inventions for humanity. (Provide examples)

Question 2: Perception of the word “leisure” in the poem Leisure by Nguyen Binh Khiem. From there, relate it to the following verses in Summer Scene by Nguyen Trai and comment on the beauty of the souls of the two authors:

The fish market buzzes in the fisherman's village,

If only the Shun zither could play a note,

For the people's wealth to be everywhere.

- Requirements for skills: Know how to write a literary discussion essay. Clear structure, logically organized arguments, fluent writing, free from expression, vocabulary, and spelling mistakes.

- Requirements for knowledge: Can develop it in different ways, but must ensure some basic ideas as follows:

* Explanation:

- Leisure refers to being leisurely, carefree, uncomplicated.

- Leisure is elevated to a way of living, even a philosophy of life, prevalent among intellectuals of the past. The leisurely lifestyle often arises from dissatisfaction with current events.

>> Leisure is a major theme in Nguyen Binh Khiem's poetry, essentially living in harmony with nature, transcending fame and fortune, maintaining a noble and pure character.

* On the concept of “leisure” in the poem Leisure by Nguyen Binh Khiem:

- Leisure is a state of leisure, freely choosing a way of living, blending into nature's four seasons, living a simple and noble life. (Analyze evidence from lines 1, 2 and 5, 6)

- The contrast between foolish – wise, showing a clear, astute intellect, disregarding fame and fortune, maintaining a noble character. (Analyze evidence from lines 3, 4 and 7, 8)

- Artistic features:

+ The poem uses the traditional seven-word eight-line verse form, combining lyricism and philosophy; subtle, profound implicit expressions.

+ Language is simple, natural; a relaxed tone matching the poem's spirit.

+ Artistic devices of parallelism, metaphor, reverse expressions, and allusions are creatively and subtly employed.

* Relate to the verses in Summer Scene by Nguyen Trai and comment on the beauty of the souls of the two authors:

- Relate:

+ (Briefly introduce Nguyen Trai, the poem, the excerpt)

+ The vibrant summer scene (the sound of the buzzing cicadas), peaceful and joyous village life (bustling fish market). Nguyen Trai wishes for the Shun zither to praise the scene where “people are wealthy everywhere,” desiring prosperity and happiness for the people.

+ Artistic features: The creative use of the seven-word verse form; expressive language and imagery; the art of parallelism and allusions.

* Comment on the beauty of the souls of the two authors:

- Common points: Both Nguyen Trai and Nguyen Binh Khiem were talented intellectuals, patriotic, and compassionate to the people, reluctantly withdrawing to preserve unblemished integrity. Through their works, one sees a love for nature, life, and indifference to fame and wealth. This reflects the noble personalities of both authors.

- Differences:

+ The essence gathered in Uc Trai's poetry is around the people. Concerning leisure, wishing to forget worldly affairs, but the nationalist sentiment and concern for the people constantly weigh on the poets' minds, with a body at leisure but not a carefree mind.

+ In the poem Leisure, Nguyen Binh Khiem fully rejoices in nature, rustic village life, transcending mundane fame and fortune; living easily and casually. Leisure is elevated to Nguyen Binh Khiem's philosophy of life, demonstrating a noble and profound scholar's integrity.

+ (Students can explain differences based on social context, personality, and the inherent creativity of art).

* Conclusion: Summarize the issue, personal relation.
