Under Section III of the General Education Program for English, attached to Circular 32/2018/TT-BGDDT, the general objectives of teaching 12th-grade English in Vietnam are as follows:
* General objectives
- The general education program for English helps students acquire a new communication tool, forming and developing students' communication skills in English through listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills.
Upon completing the general education program, students are expected to reach Level 3 in the 6-level Foreign Language Proficiency Framework for Vietnam. This foundation is crucial for students to use English in their studies, fostering lifelong learning habits to become global citizens in the period of integration.
- The general education program for English helps students gain an overview of the countries, people, and cultures of some English-speaking countries and other countries worldwide; and have a positive attitude and feelings towards the countries, people, cultures, and languages of these countries.
Additionally, the general education program for English also contributes to forming and developing students’ essential qualities and competencies needed for employees: awareness and responsibility in labor, guiding and choosing a suitable career based on abilities and interests, and adaptability in the context of the new industrial revolution.
Furthermore, the specific objectives for the upper secondary level are as follows:
After completing the English curricula at the upper secondary level, students can:
- Use English as a communication tool through four skills: listening, speaking, reading, and writing to meet basic and practical communication needs on familiar topics related to school, leisure activities, professions, etc.
- Continue to form and develop basic knowledge of English, including phonetics, vocabulary, and grammar; gain a broader understanding of the countries, people, and cultures of English-speaking countries and other countries around the world through English, understand and respect the diversity of cultures, and begin to reflect on Vietnamese cultural values in English.
- Use English to enhance the quality of learning other subjects in the general education program.
- Use English to pursue further study goals or to work immediately after completing high school.
