Chung Cake Wrapping Contest
Every Tet holiday, I eagerly follow my mother to my grandmother's village to participate in the traditional Chung cake wrapping contest. From early morning, the temple courtyard was bustling with laughter and a stream of eager people. Everyone wore beautiful clothes, with radiant faces welcoming the new year. The temple gate was lavishly decorated with a bright red banner: "Celebrate the New Spring - Enjoy the Golden Rice Festival." The festival began with a ceremonial incense offering and unique performances praising the homeland and bountiful harvests. The most exciting part was the Chung cake wrapping contest held the next day. Teams of five people prepared dong leaves, sticky rice, green beans, and pork to wrap square cakes. Everyone worked attentively while the audience around excitedly cheered. When the pot was placed on the stove, drumbeats resonated, making the atmosphere even more lively. The contest not only brought joy but also helped me better understand the traditional customs of my homeland.
Boat Racing Festival
Every year, on January 16th, my hometown hosts a boat racing festival. The river winds like a pink silk ribbon, with bunches of balloons, banners, and slogans brightly decorated along the banks. The festivities begin with a ceremony at the village temple. The elders offer incense and offerings to the village’s tutelary deity. Following this is the boat racing competition. On the river, dozens of boats await at the starting point, each with ten strong young men ready to row. They wore beautiful uniforms in different team colors. When the whistle signaled the race's start, the boats shot forward towards the finish line. People crowded along the riverbanks to cheer for the races. I wish I could return to my hometown every year to witness its traditional boat racing festival.
Boat Racing on the Homeland River
Last summer, I witnessed the boat racing festival on the river in my hometown. From early morning, the riverbanks were packed with spectators. The boats were brilliantly decorated, and the rowers wore standout uniforms. When the drum sounded, the teams rowed vigorously, oars splashing white foam. Cheers and shouts echoed throughout the river bend. The competition was intensely exciting, with each team striving to reach the finish line first. Finally, our village’s boat team won the race. I felt very happy and proud of my hometown.
