When did the Viet Bac Campaign take place?
The Viet Bac Campaign, also known as the Viet Bac Campaign in autumn-winter, 1947, was a campaign during the resistance war against the French by the Vietnamese people.
The Viet Bac Campaign lasted 75 days and nights from October 7 to December 19, 1947. Our military forces eliminated more than 7,200 enemy troops, shot down and damaged 18 aircraft, sank 16 warships and 38 canoes, and destroyed 255 vehicles of various types.
The main developments of the Viet Bac Campaign in autumn-winter, 1947 can be divided into three phases:
- Phase 1: The French began the campaign (September 10 – September 17, 1947): The French mobilized 12,000 soldiers, divided into three divisions to attack Viet Bac.
+ The airborne division landed in Bac Kan, Cho Moi, and Cho Don.
+ The naval division followed the Lo River and Gam River to attack Tuyen Quang and Yen Bai.
+ The ground division moved from Lang Son through Cao Bang to encircle Viet Bac.
+ Our forces executed a strategic retreat to preserve forces and organized small ambushes.
- Phase 2: The French advanced deeper, and we counterattacked (September 18 – October 15, 1947): The French occupied Bac Kan but faced difficulties with the mountainous terrain and ambushes from our forces.
+ At the Lo River, the battles at Doan Hung and Khe Lau inflicted significant losses on the French navy.
+ In Bac Kan and Cho Don, our forces launched fierce counterattacks, preventing the French from expanding their control.
- Phase 3: The French retreated, and we pursued (October 16 – December 15, 1947): The French began withdrawing as they failed to achieve strategic objectives.
+ On October 24, 1947, our forces launched a major ambush at the Lo River sinking many French warships.
+ At Doan Hung and Binh Ca, we continued to secure major victories, disrupting the enemy’s plans for a safe withdrawal.
