What is the logic behind the construction and development of the History and Geography program at the primary level in Vietnam?
Based on Subsection 4 Section 8 of the General Education Program for History and Geography issued together with Circular 32/2018/TT-BGDDT, the logic behind the construction and development of the History and Geography program at the primary level is as follows:
Some history and geography knowledge for primary schools has been integrated into certain topics of the subject "Nature and Society" in grades 1, 2, and 3.
From grades 4 and 5, history and geography education content is organized into an independent subject to help students expand and enhance their understanding of the surrounding environment, suitable for their cognitive level.
History and geography education content include: initial knowledge about nature, population, some economic activities, history - culture of different regions, of the country, and the world; events, historical figures that mark the development of historical periods, achievements in the cause of building (economy, politics, culture,...) and defending the nation.
The History and Geography program is not divided into two separate modules.
History and geography knowledge is integrated into themes and expanded in terms of geographical and social space (starting from local, regional to national and global levels).
This logic ensures that upon completing the subject at the primary level, students will have an initial understanding of the history and geography of their local area, region, country, and world to continue studying History and Geography at the lower secondary level.
When teaching, teachers should link content with the distinctive, typical features of the history and geography of the local area.
The content of History and Geography subjects focuses on choosing "points." Selected history knowledge does not strictly adhere to chronological order but reflects events and historical figures representing certain regions and historical periods.
For geography, regions are selected not only based on natural similarities but also on the historical significance of the area; each region is introduced by selecting some typical geographical features.
The content scope of "Your Local Area" in Grade 4 is at the provincial or municipal level.
Localities base on the specified achievement requirements in the program to construct specific teaching content suitable for the characteristics of each locality.
