What is the fundamental matter of philosophy?
The fundamental matter of philosophy concerns the relationship between existence and thought, between matter and consciousness. It is considered fundamental because solving it determines the basis for addressing other philosophical issues.
Two aspects of the fundamental matter:
+ First aspect: Answers the question of which comes first between matter and consciousness, and which determines the other. There are two differing answers leading to two opposing philosophical tendencies:
+ Materialism: Argues that matter is primary and consciousness is secondary. Matter determines consciousness.
+ Idealism: Argues that consciousness is primary and matter is secondary. Consciousness determines matter.
- Second aspect: Answers the question regarding human cognitive ability. There are two main viewpoints:
+ Epistemology: Believes that humans can perceive the world.
+ Agnosticism: Argues that humans cannot fully perceive the world.
- Significance of the fundamental matter: Solving the fundamental matter of philosophy helps determine the theoretical foundation for other philosophical perspectives, thus influencing how other philosophical issues are viewed and resolved.
