Based on Section 1 of the General Education Program for History and Geography issued with Circular 32/2018/TT-BGDDT, the characteristics of the History and Geography subject are as follows:
History and Geography at the elementary level is a compulsory subject, taught and learned in grades 4 and 5.
The subject is built on the foundation of and develops from Natural and Social Studies subjects in grades 1, 2, and 3, serving as a basis for studying History and Geography in middle school, while also contributing to laying the initial groundwork for education in social sciences at higher levels.
The subject contributes to the formation and development in students of key qualities and general competencies as identified in the Overall Curriculum.
The History and Geography curriculum at the elementary level includes the basic and essential knowledge and skills regarding the geography and history of local areas, regions, the country of Vietnam, neighboring countries, and some basic aspects of world geography and history.
The content of the History and Geography subject is also directly related to many other subjects and educational activities such as: Ethics, Vietnamese, Experiential Activities, ...
From this, it can be seen that elementary school students start studying History and Geography from grade 4.

What are objectives of that primary History and Geography curriculum in Vietnam?
Based on Section 3 of the General Education Program for History and Geography issued with Circular 32/2018/TT-BGDDT, the objectives of the elementary History and Geography curriculum are as follows:
The History and Geography subject at the elementary level forms and develops in students the competencies of history and geography with the following components:
- Scientific perception of history and geography; exploring history and geography; applying acquired knowledge and skills; while also contributing to the formation and development of general competencies: self-management and self-learning, communication and cooperation, problem-solving, and creativity.
The History and Geography subject at the elementary level helps students explore the natural and social world around them to foster national pride, love for nature, homeland, and country; awareness of environmental protection, the conservation and development of Vietnamese cultural values; respect for cultural differences between nations and ethnic groups;
From there, it contributes to forming and developing qualities such as patriotism, kindness, diligence, honesty, and responsibility.

Based on Section 4 of the General Education Program for History and Geography issued with Circular 32/2018/TT-BGDDT, the requirements for elementary school students in the History and Geography curriculum are as follows:
(1). Requirements for key qualities and general competencies
The History and Geography subject at the elementary level contributes to forming and developing in students the key qualities and general competencies according to the levels appropriate for the subject and education level as stipulated in the Overall Curriculum.
(2). Requirements for specific competencies
The History and Geography subject forms and develops in students the competencies of history and geography, which are the specific manifestations of scientific competencies with the following components: scientific perception of history and geography; exploring history and geography; applying acquired knowledge and skills.
