Are students who win consolation prizes in the national excellent student contests eligible for direct admission in Vietnam?
Pursuant to Article 8 of the University and College Admissions Regulation in the Early Childhood Education sector issued together with Circular 08/2022/TT-BGDDT on subjects eligible for direct admission and prioritization, as follows:
Subjects eligible for direct admission and prioritization
1. Labor heroes, heroes of the people's armed forces, and national emulation soldiers are directly admitted into fields, programs as regulated by the training institution.
2. Candidates who achieve high distinctions in national or international competitions, organized or participated in by the Ministry of Education and Training (MoET) or the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism are subject to direct admission in the year they graduate from high school (or graduate from intermediate education) into fields relevant to the competition subject, topic, or profession; specifically in the following cases:
a) Candidates who win the first, second, or third prize in national or international competitions for excellent students or national or international scientific and technical contests organized or participated in by MoET. The time of winning the prize should not exceed 3 years from the time of direct admission consideration;
b) Candidates who win official prizes in international arts competitions on singing, dancing, music, fine arts recognized by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism. The time of winning the prize should not exceed 4 years from the time of direct admission consideration;
c) Candidates participating in national teams competing in official international competitions confirmed by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism to have completed their tasks, including: World Championships, World Cups, Olympic Games, Asian Games (ASIAD), Asian Championships, Asian Cups, Southeast Asian Championships, Southeast Asian Games (SEA Games), Southeast Asian Cups. The time of winning the prize should not exceed 4 years from the time of direct admission consideration;
d) Candidates who win the first, second, or third prize in ASEAN Skills Competitions and International Skills Competitions authorized by the Ministry of Labor, Invalids and Social Affairs to participate. The time of winning the prize should not exceed 3 years from the time of direct admission consideration.

5. Training institutions specify other prioritization forms (prioritized admission within the year of graduation from high school or intermediate education) for the following cases:
a) Candidates specified in Clauses 1 and 2 of this Article applying for fields according to their aspirations (not using the direct admission privilege);
b) Candidates who win consolation prizes in the national excellent student contests; candidates who win the fourth prize in national scientific and technical contests applying for fields relevant to the competition subject or topic they have won prizes in. The time of winning the prize should not exceed 3 years from the time of consideration;
c) Candidates who win gold, silver, bronze medals in national sports competitions organized once a year and candidates recognized as national champions by the General Department of Sports and Physical Training applying for relevant sports fields. The time of winning the prize should not exceed 4 years from the time of consideration;
d) Candidates who win official prizes in national professional arts competitions on singing, dancing, music, fine arts applying for relevant arts fields. The time of winning the prize should not exceed 4 years from the time of consideration;
đ) Candidates who win the first, second, or third prize in ASEAN Skills Competitions and International Skills Competitions applying for relevant fields. The time of winning the prize should not exceed 3 years from the time of consideration.
6. Training institutions define and publish in the enrollment scheme, enrollment plan, subjects, targets, criteria, scope of enrollment, fields, and training programs for direct admission and prioritization.
Thus, students who win consolation prizes in the national excellent student contests do not fall under the category of direct admission to universities. In cases where higher education institutions specify other forms of prioritized admission, they may include students who win consolation prizes in the national excellent student contests as subjects for prioritized admission.

Who are eligible to participate in the national excellent student contests?
Pursuant to Article 4 of the Regulation on national excellent student contests issued with Circular 17/2023/TT-BGDDT on subjects eligible to participate in the national excellent student contests as follows:
* For the national excellent student contests:
- High school students with a good conduct (or discipline) and academic performance rating (or academic ability) from good or higher according to the final results of the semester or academic year adjacent to the competition and selected into the team of the competition unit;
- Each candidate is only allowed to participate in one subject in a school year.
* For the Olympic team selection competition:
High school students who belong to one of the following categories:
- Selected by MoET from among the students who have won prizes in the national excellent student contests within the same academic year based on the principle from high to low scores, ensuring that the number of students selected for each subject does not exceed eight (08) times the number of students needed to form the national team for the international Olympics in that subject;
- Did not participate in the national excellent student contests within the same academic year but were members of the national team for regional Olympics; members of the national team for international Olympics in the previous academic year.
What subjects are included in the national excellent student contests in Vietnam?
Pursuant to Clause 1, Article 5 of the Regulation on national excellent student contests issued with Circular 17/2023/TT-BGDDT, the national excellent student contests includes the following subjects:
- For the national excellent student contests, the following subjects are included: Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Informatics, Literature, History, Geography, and Foreign Languages (English, Russian, French, Chinese). The competition will only consider organizing a subject if there are at least 05 units registered to compete. Any adjustments to the subjects (if any) will be considered and decided by the Minister of MoET;
- For the Olympic team selection competition, the following subjects are included: Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Informatics.
