Is a student, who achieves third prize in the national excellent student contest, eligible for direct admission to university in Vietnam?
According to Point a, Clause 2, Article 8 of the University Admission Regulations, and College Admissions for Early Childhood Education attached to Circular 08/2022/TT-BGDDT:
Direct Admission and Admission Priority:
- Labor Heroes, Heroes of the People's Armed Forces, National Emulation Soldiers are eligible for direct admission to programs specified by the educational institution.
2. Candidates with high achievements in national or international competitions or contests organized or entrusted by the Ministry of Education and Training, Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, are eligible for direct admission in the year they graduate from high school (or complete intermediate level) to suitable fields related to their competition subjects, topics, or fields of study or competition; specifically in the following cases:
a) Candidates who won first, second, or third prize in national or international excellent student contests or national or international scientific and technical contests organized or sent by the Ministry of Education and Training; the award time must not exceed 3 years from the time of direct admission application;
b) Candidates who won official prizes in international art competitions in singing, dancing, music, and fine arts recognized by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism; the award time must not exceed 4 years from the time of direct admission application;
c) Candidates who participated in the national team at official international competitions recognized and confirmed by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism to have fulfilled their duties, including: World Championships, World Cups, Olympic Games, Asian Games (ASIAD), Asian Championships, Asian Cups, Southeast Asian Championships, Southeast Asian Games (SEA Games), Southeast Asian Cups; the award time must not exceed 4 years from the time of direct admission application;
d) Candidates who won first, second, or third prize in regional ASEAN or international vocational skills competitions sent by the Ministry of Labor - Invalids and Social Affairs; the award time must not exceed 3 years from the time of direct admission application.

Thus, candidates who win third prize in the national excellent student contest are eligible for direct admission to universities in fields related to their competition subjects.

Can candidates who passed university entrance exams in Vietnam request to defer results?
According to Article 10 of the University Admission Regulations and College Admissions for Early Childhood Education attached to Circular 08/2022/TT-BGDDT:
Deferral of Admission Results:
- Candidates who have received admission notifications are eligible to defer their admission results in the following cases:
a) Enlisting in military service or youth volunteers immediately in the year of admission per decisions or orders from competent authorities;
b) Suffering from severe illness or serious accident that prevents timely enrollment, with medical records and confirmation from competent health authorities.
- Candidates specified in Clause 1 must submit a deferral application with supporting documents to the educational institution for enrollment. The maximum deferral period is determined by the educational institution, but not less than 3 years for those specified at Point a, Clause 1 of this Article.
- Immediately upon meeting conditions for resumption of studies, individuals with deferred admission results must fulfill enrollment procedures as required by the educational institution, including providing evidence of completed duties or recovery. For cases specified in Clause 1 with a deferral period of 3 years or more, the educational institution may consider referring them to preparatory courses before formal admission.
Thus, candidates who passed university entrance exams and received admission notifications can defer their admission results and are eligible for deferral only in the following cases:
- Enlisting in military service or youth volunteers immediately in the year of admission as per decisions or orders from competent authorities. In this case, the deferral period is not less than 3 years.
- Suffering from severe illness or serious accident preventing timely enrollment, with medical records and confirmation from competent health authorities.
