Below are sample descriptive essays about a family member for 5th-grade students in Vietnam:

My Brother

In my family, the person I cherish and am closest to is my brother. He is very cheerful and kind.

His name is Tuan. He is tall and slim with tanned skin. He has an oval-shaped face. His large round eyes are dark brown with long eyelashes. With those captivating eyes, my mom says he looks like a girl. He just smiles gently. He has a straight nose and heart-shaped lips that always look full like he's wearing lipstick. Because of this, everyone says that if he were a girl, he would be more fitting.

Although his appearance is like that, he is very masculine. He is very gentlemanly with women and always helps others. Whenever there is an electrical failure, a water leak, or we need to install more lights in the house, he can handle it all without needing to call a repairman. After work, he often helps my dad with gardening and teaching me my lessons. From the first alphabet to complex calculations now, he has taught me patiently. Because of that, my academic performance keeps improving.

Besides his regular job in refrigeration, he attends additional classes on motorcycle repair on weekends because vehicles are his passion. Occasionally, he takes me to the western countryside, just the two of us, to fish and catch birds. He always saves the best food for me and comforts me whenever I'm scolded.

I love my brother very much. I wish him always happiness, joy, and good health so he can teach me good and right things. I promise to study hard to become a talented and useful person to the family and society like him.

My Younger Sister

In my family, everyone has their own hobbies. My dad likes reading newspapers, my mom loves cooking, I can never be without my comic books, and the most special is Linh - my younger sister - with her adorable hobby: drawing pictures of family members. I've watched Linh draw, and through that, I've discovered many interesting things about my sister.

Linh is a very sweet girl, loved by the whole family. But she's also quite mischievous. She always thinks up all sorts of tricks to tease me.

Once, Linh borrowed my photo album. I guessed she was up to something naughty, so I secretly hid behind the door watching. To my surprise, Linh was drawing me. Carefully placing my portrait on the table, Linh began her creation. Her small, rosy hands carefully held a black crayon and drew a big circle. Her bright black eyes focused on the picture, then drew two smaller circles in purple. Turns out, it was my face - or rather, a horribly distorted rock and a skewed pair of glasses covering half my face. I felt sorry for my own face. Yet Linh, unaware of my presence, continued drawing with her cheerful demeanor. Her braided pigtails swung as her pink mouth smiled while drawing. Her hands continued drawing my hair tied up like a hen's tail, adorned with a cute blue bow. Suddenly, her eyes became mischievous, her face lit up with joy, her cheeks rosy, and she tapped her foot against the table, even singing. Who knows what she's come up with now.

With a red crayon in hand, Linh framed a banana-like mouth. She chose a red crayon but only colored half, using green for the other half. So my lips ended up with two colors - truly playful. But her eyes gleamed with more delight, her smile widened when she used pink to dot my cheeks.

I couldn't comprehend what Linh was drawing. Touching my cheek, oh my, it was the new pimple that had just appeared. She could think of anything. Yet she continued drawing, always joyous.

But as time passed, Linh began to tire. She tried to draw me a pink shirt, the unique color I love. Sweat began to bead on her face, her cheeks became rosy. It seemed that painting a shirt with so many flowers was challenging for her, yet she was passionately immersed. Her agile hands colored swiftly, her eyes glimmered appealingly, her hair swung. Finally, Linh completed the painting. She joyfully ran to show it to me.

After watching Linh draw firsthand, I found her so endearing. Perhaps in the future, my sister will become a famous artist.

My Mother

This year, my mother is almost forty-one years old. With her slender, graceful figure, she embodies the beauty of a kind mother, her silky black hair cascading down her back, neatly tied when she's outside. Her big black eyes always look at me with affectionate closeness. My mother's face is oval with fair skin. Her thin red lips lie beneath a high, delicate nose making her look increasingly beautiful. Her smile is as bright as a freshly bloomed rose on an early morning. Her hands are round and fair, having nurtured and guided me since I was born. Her voice is filled with emotions, sometimes as gentle as a lullaby, sometimes as melodious as a morning nightingale's song. My mother sews and embroiders beautifully, especially long dresses. On ordinary days, she wears a neat outfit, while she dons elegant, self-made long dresses when teaching, exuding both grace and sophistication.

At home, my mother is responsible for household chores. She assigns me light tasks such as sweeping floors and folding clothes... My father helps by washing clothes, tidying the house, and occasionally my mother decorates the living room with flowers. Whenever guests arrive, she welcomes them warmly, offering them fruit and cool drinks. Every morning, she wakes up early to prepare breakfast for the family, allowing my brother and me to head to school on time. When I'm sick, she stays awake all night to care for me. In the evening, she usually spends about thirty minutes tutoring me before checking students' workbooks and lesson plans for the next day's class at school. She is very kind-hearted and gentle, treating students like her own children, nurturing and loving them immensely, which is why many students adore her. When I make mistakes, she gently reminds me without scolding or ever hitting me.

My mother is truly precious, I always love her and am proud to be her child. Whenever she holds me, resting in her arms, I feel so warm. In my heart, she is everything, the most wonderful fairy in my life. I wish to grow up quickly to ease her burdens. I promise to study diligently and excel to repay my parents and teachers for nurturing me. Mom, I love you very much!
