Sample No. 1:
My family consists of two brothers; I am the youngest. My parents passed away more than ten years ago. I stayed with my brother for a while until he got married. Not wanting me to live with them, they decided to divide the property. Taking advantage of their authority, the couple took all the valuable assets, leaving me only a small plot and a sweet starfruit tree at the end of the garden. Being the younger sibling, I didn’t demand anything and didn’t complain, just working odd jobs to make ends meet. When the starfruit tree bore fruit, suddenly a strange bird came and ate the fruits one by one. Troubled by this, I lamented to the bird: - Oh bird! My family's only source of livelihood is this starfruit tree, if you eat it all, what should I rely on? The strange bird replied: - Eat one fruit, pay a piece of gold, sew a three-gang pouch, and take it to store it. The next day, the strange bird took me to an island far off the coast filled with precious gold and jewels. Following the bird’s advice, I took just enough to fill a three-gang pouch and then the bird returned me home. From then on, my life became more prosperous and wealthy. Knowing the story, my brother and his wife came over every day to persuade me to exchange all their property for the starfruit tree. Out of compassion for my brother, I agreed to the exchange. During the starfruit season, my brother and his wife took turns waiting by the tree for the strange bird to arrive. The strange bird came and ate, just as it had told me. After the bird left, my brother and his wife gleefully went home and made a pouch not of three but twelve gangs. The next morning, the strange bird arrived to carry my brother to the island. Being greedy, my brother filled the pouch with all the gold and jewels he could find, and even stuffed whatever he could into his clothing, then clumsily climbed onto the bird's back with the heavy pouch. It was too heavy, and the bird had to flap its wings three times before it could lift off. As they flew over the sea, a strong wind blew, causing the bird to falter and throw my brother along with the gold into the deep sea. I was very saddened by my brother’s death, but thinking it over, it served as a lesson for the greedy and selfish, as our ancestors taught: "Greed leads to downfall." |
Sample No. 2:
I am an old woman living in solitude in a small house. I am weak and unable to farm, and I have no children or grandchildren to rely on, so life is very difficult. Every day, I have to go to the fields to catch crabs and snails to make a living. One day, I accidentally caught a very beautiful snail, its shell covered in a brilliant blue, sparkling in the sunlight. Finding it too beautiful to sell, I brought it home and placed it in the water jar outside the yard. Strangely, from that day on, every time I came home from work, I found the house clean and tidy, the garden well-tended, and the pigs and chickens well-fed. Most notably, there was always a meal ready on the table. At first, I thought the neighbors took pity on an elderly widow and came to help. But that wasn’t the case. I decided to find out who was secretly helping me. Sticking to the plan, one day I pretended to go to work as usual. But halfway there, I turned back, found a hidden spot, and watched... I waited, and finally, I saw a young woman, around eighteen to twenty years old, as beautiful as an angel, emerge from the water jar. The fairy girl gently entered the house, picked up a broom, and began sweeping and tidying up, feeding the pigs and chickens... I was amazed. Guessing that the fairy emerged from the snail shell, I quietly approached the jar, picked up the shell, and broke it into pieces. I didn't want the girl to disappear into the shell; I wanted her to stay with me, so I did this. Upon hearing the noise, the girl hurried over to the jar to hide in the shell, but it was too late. Seeing her surprise, I softly said: - "Daughter, please stay here with me." The girl agreed. From then on, the fairy snail became a beloved daughter to me, and thanks to her, my life was very happy. |
Sample No. 3:
I am a woodcutter living in the southern mountains. I have a prosperous life, thanks to a miraculous encounter a few years ago. Back then, I was a poor woodcutter, and my entire wealth was an old iron ax. One day, while chopping wood by the lake, I carelessly dropped my ax into the water. The lake was very deep, and I couldn't swim, so I didn’t know what to do. Just then, the water rippled, and an old man with white hair and beard appeared in the middle of the lake. In his hand, he held a golden ax and asked if it was mine. Seeing it, I shook my head, refusing it, and told him my ax was made of iron. Hearing this, the old man dived back into the water and disappeared, only to return later with a silver ax and asked the same question, to which I again shook my head. After his third disappearance, he returned once more, this time holding my old iron ax. Seeing it, I delightedly asked to have it back. Hearing my request, the old man laughed and let me have my ax. He also gifted me two more axes, one gold and one silver. He said they were a reward for my honesty. Then he disappeared. Thanks to those two axes, I had the capital to start a business, opened a store, and gradually became wealthy. |
