Under Clause 1 Article 46 of the Law on Public Employees 2010, regulations on pensions are as follows:
Retirement
1. Public employees are entitled to pensions as stipulated by the labor code and social insurance law.

According to Article 169 of the Labor Code 2019, provisions on retirement age are as follows:
Retirement ages
1. An employee who has paid social insurance for an adequate period of time as prescribed by social insurance laws shall receive retirement pension when he/she reaches the retirement age.
2. Retirement ages of employees in normal working conditions shall be gradually increased to 62 for males by 2028 and 60 for females in 2035.
From 2021, the retirement ages of employees in normal working conditions shall be 60 yeas 03 months for males and 55 years 04 months for females, and shall increase by 03 months for males and 04 months for females after every year.
3. The retirement ages of employees who suffer from work capacity reduction; doing laborious, toxic or dangerous works; working in highly disadvantaged areas may be younger by up to 05 years than the retirement ages specified in Clause 2 of this Article, unless otherwise prescribed by law.
4. Retirement ages of skilled employees and employees in certain special cases may be older by up to 05 years than the retirement ages specified in Clause 2 of this Article, unless otherwise prescribed by law.
5. The Government shall elaborate this Article.
According to the above regulations, from 2021, the retirement age for teachers in normal working conditions is 60 years and 03 months for male teachers and 55 years and 04 months for female teachers; and shall increase by 03 months for males and 04 months for females after every year.
Thus, the retirement age for teachers in 2025 is:
- Male teachers: From 61 years and 3 months.
- Female teachers: From 56 years and 8 months.
May retired teachers in Vietnam teach extra classes for students?
Under Article 4 Circular 29/2024/TT-BGDDT (effective from February 14, 2025) on cases where extra classes in Vietnam are not allowed in Vietnam:
1. Extra classes for primary school students must not be organized, except in cases of training in arts, sports, and life skills.
2. Teachers currently teaching at schools are not allowed to offer external extra classes with fees to their students according to the school's educational plan.
3. Teachers from public schools are not allowed to participate in managing or operating external extra classes but may be involved in teaching extra classes.
Under the above regulations, retired teachers may teach extra classes for students. Therefore, from February 14, 2025, when Circular 29/2024/TT-BGDDT comes into force, retired teachers may continue teaching extra classes.
However, retired teachers may not organize extra classes for primary school students (including pre-primary children), except in cases of training in arts, sports, and life skills.
