Tet Holiday Schedule 2024? How many days off for Tet 2024?

Tet Ta 2024, also known as Tet Nguyen Dan or Lunar New Year, marks the first day of the new year according to the Lunar Calendar. This is the main Tet holiday for most Asian countries.

According to the eternal calendar of 2024, Tet Ta 2024, or the 1st day of January in the Year of the Dragon (1st day of Tet) falls on Saturday, February 10, 2024, in the Gregorian Calendar.

As stipulated in Article 112 of the Labor Code 2019, Tet Ta 2024 or Lunar New Year 2024 will observe a regulation of 5 days off.

To be specific, the Tet holiday schedule 2024 will be decided by the Prime Minister of the Government of Vietnam.

According to Notice 5015/TB-LDTBXH 2023, the Lunar New Year 2024 has a total of 7 days off, including 5 days for the Lunar New Year and 2 compensatory days off for weekly rest days as regulated.

To be specific, officials and public employees as well as workers in state agencies (referred to as official public employees) will have the Lunar New Year 2024 off as follows:

- From Thursday, February 8, 2024 (i.e., 29th day of December in the Year of the Cat) to Wednesday, February 14, 2024 (i.e., 5th day of January in the Year of the Dragon).

For workers who are not official public employees, the Tet holiday schedule 2024 will be decided by the employer.

The employer will decide the Lunar New Year 2024 holiday schedule based on the following 3 options:

- Choose 1 last day of the Year of the Cat and 4 first days of the Year of the Dragon or 2 last days of the Year of the Cat and 3 first days of the Year of the Dragon or 3 last days of the Year of the Cat and 2 first days of the Year of the Dragon.- If the weekly rest day coincides with the Tet holiday, workers are entitled to a compensatory rest day on the next working day.

Counting from today, December 28, 2023, there are about 43 days left until Tet Ta 2024.

When do workers return to work?

According to Notice 5015/TB-LDTBXH 2023, the Lunar New Year 2024 has a total of 7 days off, including 5 days for the Lunar New Year and 2 compensatory days for weekly rest days as regulated.

To be specific:

(1) For officials and public employees and workers in state agencies, the holiday will end on Wednesday, February 14, 2024, in the Gregorian Calendar. This means official public employees will return to work on Thursday, February 15, 2024 (6th day of Tet).

(2) For the private sector, the employer will decide the Lunar New Year 2024 holiday schedule based on the following 3 options:

- Choose 1 last day of the Year of the Cat and 4 first days of the Year of the Dragon or 2 last days of the Year of the Cat and 3 first days of the Year of the Dragon or 3 last days of the Year of the Cat and 2 first days of the Year of the Dragon.- If the weekly rest day coincides with the Tet holiday, workers are entitled to a compensatory rest day on the next working day.

Thus, for those who are not official public employees, the Tet holiday schedule 2024 and the return to work schedule after Tet will be decided by the employer.

Example:

For cases where workers do not have to work on Saturdays

- The company chooses the option of 1 day before Tet and 4 days after Tet:

This means workers will start their Lunar New Year 2024 holiday from Friday, February 9, 2024 (30th day of December in the Year of the Cat) to Thursday, February 15, 2024 (6th day of Tet), and return to work on February 16, 2024.

- The company chooses the option of 2 days before Tet and 3 days after Tet:

Workers will start their Lunar New Year 2024 holiday from Thursday, February 8, 2024 (28/12/2023 Lunar Calendar) to Wednesday, February 14, 2024 (5th day of Tet), and return to work on February 15, 2024.

- The company chooses the option of 3 days before Tet and 2 days after Tet:

Workers will start their Lunar New Year 2024 holiday from Wednesday, February 7, 2024 (27/12/2023 Lunar Calendar) to Tuesday, February 13, 2024 (4th day of Tet), and return to work on February 14, 2024.

For cases where workers have to work on Saturdays

- The company chooses the option of 1 day before Tet and 4 days after Tet:

Workers will start their Lunar New Year 2024 holiday from Friday, February 9, 2024 (30th day of December in the Year of the Cat) to Wednesday, February 14, 2024 (5th day of Tet), and return to work on February 15, 2024.

- The company chooses the option of 2 days before Tet and 3 days after Tet:

Workers will start their Lunar New Year 2024 holiday from Thursday, February 8, 2024 (29/12/2023 Lunar Calendar) to Tuesday, February 13, 2024 (4th day of Tet), and return to work on February 14, 2024.

- The company chooses the option of 3 days before Tet and 2 days after Tet:

Workers will start their Lunar New Year holiday from Wednesday, February 7, 2024 (28/12/2023 Lunar Calendar) to Monday, February 12, 2024 (3rd day of Tet), and return to work on February 13, 2024.

Note: The decision on the Tet holiday schedule 2024 and the return to work timeline will depend on each company.

Do workers who work on Tet get bonuses?

According to Article 104 of the Labor Code 2019 regulating bonuses:

Bonus

1. A bonus is a sum of money or assets or other forms awarded by the employer to the employee based on product outcomes, business results, and the level of work completion of the employee.

2. Bonus regulations are decided by the employer and publicly announced at the workplace after consulting the employee representative organization at the establishment where one exists.

On the other hand, according to Article 98 of the Labor Code 2019, it is stipulated that workers working on holidays will receive compensation as follows:

- On holidays, Tet, and paid leave days, at least 300% excluding the salary for holidays, Tet, and paid leave days for salaried employees.

If working at night, employees are paid an additional 30% of the salary rate or the actual salary paid according to the workload of a normal working day and 20% of the salary rate or the salary based on the workload for the daytime of the Tet holiday.

Thus, workers working on Tet holidays will receive overtime pay, and if the company and the worker agree on an additional bonus, workers who work during Tet will be eligible for additional bonuses.
