New Year's Eve, also known as "Dem Tru Tich" in Vietnamese, starts from 11 PM on the 30th of the lunar month to 1 AM on the first day of the new lunar year. It is considered the most sacred night for every Vietnamese family. It is believed to be the time when heaven and earth harmonize, yin and yang join, bringing forth a new vital force full of hope.

During this time, families perform ancestor worship ceremonies, gather together to bid farewell to the old year, and welcome the new year. They pray for health, luck, peace, and prosperity for all family members.

According to the lunar calendar, New Year's Eve in 2024 (i.e., the 30th lunar day) falls on Friday, February 09, 2024, of the Gregorian calendar.

How many days do employees get off for the Lunar New Year?

Based on Article 112 of the Labor Code 2019, the regulation is as follows:

Public Holidays and New Year

1. Employees shall be entitled to fully paid days off on the following public holidays and New Year:

a) Gregorian New Year: 01 day (the 1st of January of the Gregorian calendar);

b) Lunar New Year: 05 days;

c) Victory Day: 01 day (the 30th of April of the Gregorian calendar);

d) International Labor Day: 01 day (the 1st of May of the Gregorian calendar);

e) National Day: 02 days (the 2nd of September of the Gregorian calendar and one contiguous day before or after);

f) Hung Kings' Commemoration Day: 01 day (the 10th of March of the lunar calendar).

2. Foreign employees working in Vietnam are entitled to one additional traditional new year holiday and one National Day of their country.

3. Annually, based on actual conditions, the Prime Minister of the Government of Vietnam decides specific days off for public holidays outlined in points b and e of Clause 1 of this Article.

Accordingly, employees are entitled to 5 days off for the Lunar New Year. If a weekly rest day coincides with a holiday, they are entitled to an additional compensatory day off.

How long is the Lunar New Year holiday in 2024?

On November 03, 2023, the Government Office of Vietnam issued Official Dispatch 8662/VPCP-KGVX conveying the Prime Minister's directives on the Lunar New Year and National Day holidays in 2024.

The Prime Minister of the Government of Vietnam agreed with the proposal of the Ministry of Labor, War Invalids, and Social Affairs in Official Dispatch 4594/LDTBXH-ATLD regarding the Lunar New Year holidays from February 08, 2024, to February 14, 2024, and the National Day holiday from August 31, 2024, to September 03, 2024.

For employees in enterprises, the Ministry of Labor, War Invalids, and Social Affairs stated that, based on actual conditions and the holiday schedule for officials and public employees, employers should arrange the Lunar New Year holidays for employees as follows (employers are encouraged to follow the same holiday schedule as officials and public employees).

- Lunar New Year holiday in 2024:

+ Option 1: 1 day before Tet and 4 days after Tet or 2 days before Tet and 3 days after Tet or 3 days before Tet and 2 days after Tet.+ Notify employees of the Lunar New Year holiday plan at least 30 days in advance.

Lunar New Year 2024 falls on Saturday and Sunday, thus the number of Lunar New Year holidays for employees is as follows:

*For employees who do not work on Saturdays

- If the company chooses the option of 1 day before Tet and 4 days after Tet:Employees will start their Lunar New Year holiday from Friday, February 09, 2024 (30th day of December in the Lunar Year of the Cat) to Thursday, February 15, 2024 (6th day of Tet).

- If the company chooses the option of 2 days before Tet and 3 days after Tet:Employees will start their Lunar New Year holiday from Thursday, February 08, 2024 (28th day of December in the lunar calendar), to Wednesday, February 14, 2024 (5th day of Tet).

- If the company chooses the option of 3 days before Tet and 2 days after Tet:Employees will start their Lunar New Year holiday from Wednesday, February 07, 2024 (27th day of December in the lunar calendar), to Tuesday, February 13, 2024 (4th day of Tet).

Thus, employees will have a continuous holiday of 7 days, including 5 days off for the Lunar New Year according to state regulations and 2 additional days off (because of the Saturday and Sunday overlaps).

*For employees who work on Saturdays

- If the company chooses the option of 1 day before Tet and 4 days after Tet:Employees will start their Lunar New Year holiday from Friday, February 09, 2024 (30th day of December in the Lunar Year of the Cat) to Wednesday, February 14, 2024 (5th day of Tet).

- If the company chooses the option of 2 days before Tet and 3 days after Tet:Employees will start their Lunar New Year holiday from Thursday, February 08, 2024 (28th day of December in the lunar calendar), to Tuesday, February 13, 2024 (4th day of Tet).

- If the company chooses the option of 3 days before Tet and 2 days after Tet:Employees will start their Lunar New Year holiday from Wednesday, February 07, 2024 (27th day of December in the lunar calendar), to Monday, February 12, 2024 (3rd day of Tet).

Thus, employees will have a continuous holiday of 6 days, including 5 days off for the Lunar New Year according to state regulations and 1 additional day off (because of the Sunday overlap).

Note: The above holiday schedule is for reference only. The final decision on the Lunar New Year holiday schedule for 2024 depends on each enterprise.
