Academic Performance Results of University Students by Semester: Evaluation Criteria and Credit-Based Performance Processing by Universities
How do universities handle students' academic results based on credits?
Based on Clause 1, Article 11 of the University Education Regulation issued together with Circular 08/2021/TT-BGDDT, the guidelines for handling academic results based on credits are as follows:
- At the end of each main semester, students are given an academic warning based on several conditions such as:
+ The total number of credits not passed in the semester exceeds 50% of the credits registered for that semester, or the total number of outstanding credits from the beginning of the course exceeds 24;+ The semester GPA is below 0.8 for the first semester of the course, below 1.0 for subsequent semesters;+ The cumulative GPA is below 1.2 for first-year students, below 1.4 for second-year students, below 1.6 for third-year students, and below 1.8 for students in subsequent years.
How are university students' academic results evaluated based on semesters? How do universities handle academic results based on credits?
What is the mechanism for calculating the GPA to evaluate students' academic results at universities?
Based on Clauses 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6 of Article 10 of the University Education Regulation issued together with Circular 08/2021/TT-BGDDT, the guidelines for calculating the GPA to evaluate students' academic results are as follows:
- To calculate the GPA, letter grades for courses are converted to numerical scores as below, except as stipulated in Clause 4 of this Article. Additional letter grades prescribed by the institution (if any) are also converted to corresponding numerical scores on a scale from 0 to 4.
A equals 4;B equals 3;C equals 2;D equals 1;F equals 0.
- Letter grades that are not specified in Clause 2 of this Article are not included in the calculation of the semester GPA, academic year GPA, or cumulative GPA. Courses that are not part of the training program are not included in the criteria for evaluating students' academic results.
- Institutions that adopt the year-based training system and use a 10-point scale calculate the GPAs based on the scores of the courses using the 10-point scale without converting letter grades to the 4-point scale. In this case, the institution's regulations will specify corresponding measures to handle academic results equivalent to and substitutive for the provisions in Article 12 of this Regulation.
- Students are classified by academic performance according to their semester GPA, academic year GPA, or cumulative GPA as follows:
+ According to the 4-point scale: From 3.6 to 4.0: Excellent; From 3.2 to 3.6: Very Good; From 2.5 to 3.2: Good; From 2.0 to 2.5: Average; From 1.0 to 2.0: Weak; Below 1.0: Poor.+ According to the 10-point scale: From 9.0 to 10.0: Excellent; From 8.0 to 9.0: Very Good; From 7.0 to 8.0: Good; From 5.0 to 7.0: Average; From 4.0 to 5.0: Weak; Below 4.0: Poor.
- Students are classified by academic year level based on the accumulated credits from the beginning of the course (abbreviated as N) and the average credits per academic year according to the standard study plan (abbreviated as M). Specifically:
+ First-year level: N < M;+ Second-year level: M ≤ N < 2M;+ Third-year level: 2M ≤ N < 3M;+ Fourth-year level: 3M ≤ N < 4M;+ Fifth-year level: 4M ≤ N < 5M.
On what criteria are university students' academic results evaluated based on each semester?
Based on Clause 1, Article 10 of the University Education Regulation issued together with Circular 08/2021/TT-BGDDT, the criteria for evaluating university students' academic results based on each semester are as follows:
- Students' academic results are evaluated after each semester or academic year, based on the results of the courses within the training program requirements that students have taken and have grades according to the following criteria:
+ The total number of credits for courses that the student did not pass in a semester, in an academic year, or outstanding from the beginning of the course;+ The total number of credits for courses that the student has completed from the beginning of the course (accumulated credits), including courses exempted from and recognized for credit;+ The average grade of courses that the student has taken in a semester (semester GPA), in an academic year (academic year GPA), or from the beginning of the course (cumulative GPA), calculated based on the official grade of the course and the weight of the course's credits.
