The Ministry of Health of Vietnam has issued the Decision No. 4400/QĐ-BYT in 2020 on the “International classification of diseases coding, cause of death ICD-10” and “Guidelines for coding diseases according to ICD-10” in medical examination and treatment establishments.
According to the Decision No. 4400/QĐ-BYT of the Ministry of Health of Vietnam, ICD-10 (Classifications International Classification of Diseases, 10th Revision) is the International classification of diseases and causes of death revised and supplemented by the World Health Organization (WHO) 10th revised edition in 1990 and last updated in 2019, including:
- Chapters of diseases: ICD-10 includes 22 chapters of diseases, of which 21 chapters are major diseases. Chapters are designated by one or more letters, arranged from A to Z, classified according to pathogens, exogenous causes, diseases by system organs, tumors, unusual symptoms or disorders, etc.
- Groups of diseases: Each disease chapter is divided into several disease groups (2-digit code group). In some disease chapters, for example Oncology (Chapter 2), the disease groups are further classified into Sub-Groups.
- Types of diseases: Each group of diseases is divided into many types of diseases (including 3-digit disease codes).
- Name of disease: Each type of disease can be classified into specific disease names depending on its characteristics.
- Disease code: is the name of the disease represented by alphanumeric characters. Most disease codes contain 4 characters, some disease codes consist of only 3 characters, or some disease codes have a 5th code according to anatomical location. A disease code can contain many disease names, or a disease can contain many disease codes.
In fact, ICD is used to classify diseases and health problems, the purpose is to diagnose, analyze, compare diseases, and determine the cause of death. The ICD is the universal language for recording, reporting and monitoring health problems. The medical record of any country can be read by reading the ICD code on the patient's record. Currently, the World Health Organization has officially released the ICD-11 version, which is a big improvement over ICD-10. LAWNET will soon update the Vietnamese version of ICD-11 for Customers and Members to refer to.
