When participating in traffic, how far are vehicles required to maintain distance? This is a question that Thu Ky Luat has recently received frequently from our Customers and Members. Thu Ky Luat would like to address this issue as follows:

According to the current regulations on road traffic, when participating in traffic, the vehicle operator must strictly comply with the regulations on speed and the minimum safe distance between two vehicles (belonging to the type of motor vehicles, specialized motorbikes) indicated on the road traffic signs.
To be specific, according to the provisions of Article 11 of Circular 31/2019/TT-BGTVT, when operating vehicles on the road, drivers and operators of specialized motorbikes must maintain a safe distance from the vehicle directly ahead of their own; in areas with the sign "Minimum Distance Between Vehicles," the distance must not be less than the value indicated on the sign.
The safe distance corresponding to each speed in dry road conditions is specified as follows:
- In case the operating speed is 60 km/h, the minimum safe distance is 35m;
- In case the operating speed is from over 60 km/h to 80 km/h, the minimum safe distance is 55m;
- In case the operating speed is from over 80 km/h to 100 km/h, the minimum safe distance is 70m;
- In case the operating speed is from over 100 km/h to 120 km/h, the minimum safe distance is 100m;
- In the case of operating at a speed below 60 km/h, the driver must actively maintain a safe distance appropriate to the vehicle directly ahead of their own; this distance depends on the vehicle density and actual traffic conditions to ensure traffic safety.
Note: when it is rainy, foggy, the road is slippery, the road has winding terrain, steep slopes, and limited visibility, the driver must adjust the safe distance appropriately, greater than the value indicated on the sign or the value specified above.
