Vietnam: The maximum allowable load for motor vehicles traveling on the embankment is 12 tons

This is a notable content of Circular No. 54/2013/TT-BNNPTNT guiding the classification of embankments and regulations on the allowable load for motor vehicles traveling on embankments, which was issued by the Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development of Vietnam.

According to Circular No. 54/2013/TT-BNNPTNT of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development of Vietnam, for embankment sections that have not been specifically calculated for the allowable load for motor vehicles traveling on the embankment, but the surface of the embankment has been hardened with concrete or asphalt, motor vehicles are allowed to travel on the embankment with a total load not exceeding 12 tons.

Moreover, the allowable load for motor vehicles traveling on the embankment in certain cases is regulated as follows:

- For embankment sections that also serve as roads according to the regulations in Article 28 of the Embankment Law, which have been specifically calculated for the designed load, motor vehicles are allowed to travel on the embankment based on the approved designed load.

- For embankment sections that do not fall under the above cases, motor vehicles are allowed to travel on the embankment with a total load not exceeding 10 tons.

Besides, Circular No. 54/2013/TT-BNNPTNT also stipulates principles for determining the allowable load for motor vehicles traveling on the embankment as follows:

- The allowable load for motor vehicles traveling on the embankment must ensure the safety of the embankment.

- The determination of the allowable load for motor vehicles traveling on the embankment must be based on the geological conditions of the foundation, the embankment body, the structure of the embankment, and the characteristics of the embankment.

- Signs indicating the allowable load for the embankment section must be suitable for the characteristics of the embankment section (such as intersections with the embankment, inclines to the embankment, and structures on the embankment), and facilitate the movement of vehicles on the embankment.

- Signs indicating the weight limit for motor vehicles traveling on the embankment must follow the current road traffic signs.
