Vietnam: How many exams are there in the teacher training course at the intermediate and college level?

On December 26, 2019, the Ministry of Education and Training of Vietnam issued the Circular No. 24/2019/TT-BGDĐT on Regulations on training at intermediate and college level in teacher training majors.

According to Article 16 of the Circular No. 24/2019/TT-BGDĐT of the Ministry of Education and Training of Vietnam, organizing examination and final examination of the subjects and modules of the teacher training course at the intermediate and college level is stipulated as follows:

1. Organize regular tests, periodical tests

- Regular tests are conducted by the lecturer teaching the subject or module at any time during the learning process for each subject, module through oral and written tests during class hours, written tests with a test time of 30 minutes or less, testing some practice content, practice, grading assignments and other forms of testing and assessment;

- Periodic tests are specified in the curricula of subjects and modules; periodical tests include written tests from 45 to 60 minutes, grading of major assignments, essays, practice tests, internships and other forms of testing and assessment;

- The examination process and number of tests for each specific subject or module shall be carried out in accordance with the regulations of the head of the teacher training institution, ensuring that there is at least one regular test score and one periodical test score for each learner in a subject or module.

2. Organize the final exam of the subject or module

- At the end of each semester, the head of the teacher training institution shall organize a main exam and a secondary exam for the final exam of the subject or module; secondary exams are held for learners who have not yet taken the final exam of the subject or module or whose subjects or modules have unsatisfactory scores in the main exam; moreover, the head of the teacher training institution may organize the final exam of the subject or module at another time for eligible learners to take the exam;

- Form of the final exam of the subject or module may be written, oral, multiple choice, practice, large exercises, essays, thematic defense of practice results or a combination of the above;

- Time for taking the final exam of the subject or module for each written test is from 60 to 120 minutes, time for taking the test for other forms of examination or the time for taking the test of a subject or module with specific characteristics of the training industry or profession shall be decided by the head of the teacher training institution;

- The exam schedule of the main exam must be announced at least 04 weeks before the exam, the exam schedule of the sub-exam must be announced at least 01 week before the exam; in the exam, each subject or module may be held separately, without arranging a composite exam of some subjects or modules in the same exam session of a learner;

- Exam preparation time for each subject or module is proportional to the number of credits of that subject or module and ensures at least 1/2 day of exam preparation for one credit; all subjects and modules must be arranged with a teacher to guide the exam preparation, the exam preparation outline must be announced to learners as soon as the exam preparation starts; 

- The list of learners who are eligible to take the exam or are not eligible to take the exam, with reasons clearly stated, must be publicly announced at least 5 working days before the exam date for the subject or module; the list of exam rooms and exam locations must be published before the end of the subject or module exam date from 01 to 02 working days;

- For written exam, each examination room must arrange at least two lecturers to administer the exam and not more than 50 learners to take the exam; learners taking the exam must be arranged according to their registration number; for other forms of examination, the head of the teacher training institution shall decide on the arrangement of the examination room or test location and other relevant contents;

- Ensure that all exam participants are informed about their rights, duties and obligations during the exam; all meetings related to the exam, the drawing of the exam questions, the handing over of the exam questions, test papers, test scores must be recorded in minutes;

- The form of the exam, the time to take the test, and the conditions for the final exam of the subject or module must be specified in the subject or module program.

Note: Heads of teacher training institutions shall specify the organization of examinations and end-of-course exams.
