Vietnam: Fishing ships must undergo registry and registration

Fishing ships mean ships, boats and other floating structures exclusively used for exploiting, rearing aquatic resources, preserving or processing aquatic products. To ensure safety and development in fisheries activities, fishing ships must undergo registry and registration in accordance with Vietnam’s regulations, specifically as follows:

The following fishing ships must undergo registry, excluding those with a designed waterline length of under 15 meters and with no engine fitted aboard or with fitted engines of under 20 horse powers:

- Ships installed with a main engine of 20 horse powers or more each or not installed with an engine but having a designed waterline of 15 meters or over;

- Fishing rafts and other floating structures in service of fisheries activities on lakes, rivers or seas, with a capacity of 50 m3 or more.

All fishing ships must be registered. Conditions for fishing ship registration are as follows:

- Fishing ships of lawful origin; having competent fisheries management bodies' documents approving the building or transformation of fishing ships;

- Ensuring technical safety according to the provisions of law.
