Translation Rates for Interpretation Services for Receiving Foreign Guests Working in Vietnam

The Ministry of Finance has just issued Circular 71/2018/TT-BTC on August 10, 2018, stipulating specific translation fees for hosting foreign guests working in Vietnam.

The translation fees as regulated by Circular 71 include:

- Translating one of the six official languages of the United Nations to Vietnamese (including Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian, and Spanish): 150,000 VND/page (350 words);- Translating Vietnamese to one of the six official languages of the United Nations: 180,000 VND/page (350 words);- For languages other than the official languages of the United Nations, depending on the popularity of that language within the agency or unit, the head of the agency or unit decides the translation fee, which can be increased by a maximum of 30% compared to the translation fee mentioned above.

Additionally, Circular 71 also stipulates the costs for interpretation as follows:

- General interpretation: 250,000 VND/hour/person, equivalent to 2,000,000 VND/day/person working 8 hours;- Consecutive (simultaneous) interpretation: 500,000 VND/hour/person, equivalent to 4,000,000 VND/day/person working 8 hours;- In cases of organizing large-scale international conferences or bilateral conferences, negotiation of agreements, conventions, specialized conferences, reception of special guests or A-class guests that require hiring interpreters with higher consecutive interpretation skills to ensure the quality of the conference, the head of the hosting agency or unit decides the appropriate interpretation fee and must arrange it within the budget estimate approved by the competent authority;- In cases where interpreters must be hired to participate in welcoming delegations attending international conferences, depending on specific cases, the hosting agency decides the payment of travel expenses (if any), accommodation, and daily allowance for the interpreter, which can be up to the reception policies for members of foreign delegations.

Hiring translators and interpreters is carried out when the agency or unit does not have personnel capable of meeting translation or interpretation requirements.

Please note, in cases where agencies or units use their own staff for translation or interpretation work, they are compensated a maximum of 50% of the translation or interpretation fees mentioned above. The head of the agency or unit is responsible for deciding the specific fee in each case, and it must be stipulated in the internal expenditure regulations of the agency or unit.
