The 2018 Law on Surveying and Mapping stipulates that the standardization of place names involves verifying and unifying the reading and writing in Vietnamese of place names.
Standardizing Vietnamese and international place names for uniform use.
According to Clause 3, Article 20 of the Surveying and Mapping Law 2018, the principles for place name standardization include:
- Each geographical object is associated with only one place name;- Ensuring inheritance, universality, integration, respect for beliefs, customs, and compliance with linguistic rules;- Compliance with place names stipulated by law or place names used in international treaties to which the Socialist Republic of Vietnam is a member.
Additionally, the Law also stipulates cases requiring place name standardization, including:
- Place names at one geographical location with multiple names, different pronunciations, and spellings;- Appearance or alteration of geographical objects leading to changes in place names.
Standardized place names must be developed into a database, updated, and published for use.
For standardized place names, organizations and individuals must use and express them accurately and consistently in surveying and mapping activities, ensuring they align with each historical stage.
Place name is the name of a geographical object, which is an entity in the real world associated with a specific geographical location (Clause 17, Article 3 of the Surveying and Mapping Law 2018).
