Population Density in ASEAN Statistical Indicators

On December 11, 2018, the Ministry of Planning and Investment issued Circular 06/2018/TT-BKHDT detailing the population density in the ASEAN statistical indicators.

Accordingly, Circular 06 stipulates that population density is the average number of people per one square kilometer of territorial area.

Population density is calculated by dividing the population (at a specific time or on average) of a certain residential area by the territorial area of that region. Population density can be calculated for the entire country or for specific regions (rural, urban, economic zones), provinces, districts, communes, etc., to reflect the geographical distribution of the population at a specific time according to the following formula:

Population density (people/km²) = Population (people) / Territorial area (km²)

Simultaneously, Circular 06 also stipulates that population density is primarily categorized by Provinces/Cities under Central authority and will be published annually.

The data source will be derived from:

- General Population and Housing Census;- Mid-term Population and Housing Survey;- Land Inventory Survey, Current Land Use Mapping.

See details in Circular 06/2018/TT-BKHDT which takes effect from February 15, 2019.
