According to Article 5 of Circular 01/2024/TT-NHNN, the serial number printing and management rules in currency printing process of currency printing, minting facilities must comply with the following rules:

(1) Rules of serial number printing in printing process

- In respect of banknotes issued by the State Bank of Vietnam before 2003, the serial number consists of a series letter and a natural number sequence of 07 digits starting from 0000001 onwards;

- In respect of banknotes issued by the State Bank of Vietnam from 2003, the serial number consists of a series letter and a natural number sequence of 08 digits, in which the two digits adjacent to the series letter are the last two digits of the year of production of the money, the next 06 digits are a natural number sequence starting from 000001 onwards;

- Each banknote has a unique series.

Currently, the printing of serial numbers in the currency printing process is carried out according to the rules:

- In respect of banknotes issued by the State Bank of Vietnam before 2003, the serial number consists of a series letter and a natural number sequence of 07 digits starting from 0000001 onwards.

- In respect of banknotes issued by the State Bank of Vietnam from 2003, the serial number consists of a series letter and a natural number sequence of 08 digits, in which the two digits adjacent to the series letter are the last two digits of the year of production of that money, the next 06 digits are a natural number sequence starting from 000001 onwards.

(2) Rules of serial number management in currency printing process of currency printing, minting facilities

- The printing and minting facilities implement the banknote serial number printing according to the Rules stipulated in (1). In case a defective banknote is found after the serial number printing stage, the printing and minting facilities must use a banknote with a supplementary letter for replacement. The Rule of using a supplementary letter for replacement is conducted according to the provision of the printing and minting facilities as stipulated in Clause 2 Article 9 of Circular 01/2024/TT-NHNN;

- The printing and minting facilities organize and manage the information of the serial number of each type of money (including supplementary letters) to ensure accuracy and completeness of the details stated on the seals, packs, bundles of newly printed banknotes or other packing standards as stipulated by the State Bank, including details such as printing and minting facilities, type of money, series letter, and year of production. Documents on series letters are stored at the printing and minting facilities according to the regulation of the printing and minting facilities as stipulated in Clause 2 Article 9 of Circular 01/2024/TT-NHNN.

Currently, the rules of serial number management in currency printing process at printing factories are as follows:

- The printing factory performs the bundling, packing, and sealing according to the technology process of the factory and records the serial numbers of each type of money in a book; ensuring the accurate and complete recording of details: used series letters (including supplementary letters), type of money, year of production, code of the package, pack, bundle of money. In case of defective printing (detected after the serial number printing stage) it is required to use a banknote with a supplementary letter for replacement, the printing factory must record according to the correct printing technology process of the factory.

- Documents on series letters and the serial number recording book are stored at the printing factory according to the printing technology process of the factory.
