Guidance on Thematic Map Representation

On October 18, 2018, the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment issued Circular 13/2018/TT-BTNMT stipulating the technical regulations for the creation of sea surface temperature maps and chlorophyll surface concentration maps at scales of 1:500,000 and 1:1,000,000 using low-resolution optical remote sensing data.

The format for displaying thematic maps is stipulated by Circular 13 as follows:

- The title of the thematic map includes: the topic name, the region where the map is established, and the sheet number.- The scale of the thematic map is determined based on the area, shape, size, and level of detail of the region where the map is established.- If the thematic map consists of multiple sheets, a sheet diagram is displayed in the upper right corner of the map frame.- The thematic map displays both the longitude-latitude grid system and the kilometer grid. The longitude-latitude grid on the map is represented by longitude-latitude lines with a density of 1°. The kilometer grid on the map is represented by grid cells spaced 10cm apart according to the map scale.- The map legend is placed on the right side of the map frame; if feasible, it may be placed inside the frame at an appropriate location.- Temperature zones on the thematic map are represented using an orange color scale. Isotherms and value annotations are shown in black.- Surface seawater chlorophyll concentration zones are represented on the thematic map using a green color scale. Chlorophyll concentration boundary lines and value annotations are shown in black.

For more details on the map, refer to Circular 13/2018/TT-BTNMT, effective from November 3, 2018.
