The validity period of the health insurance card (BHYT) for students (HS) and university students (SV) is the period recorded on the BHYT card from January 1 to December 31 of that year. For first-grade students and first-year university students, the validity period of the BHYT card is from the enrollment date or the expiration date of the previously issued BHYT card until December 31 of the following year. For twelfth-grade students and final-year university students, the validity period recorded on the BHYT card is from January 1 to the last day of the month in which the academic year ends.

Pursuant to the provisions at point c, Clause 1, Article 5 of Inter-Ministerial Circular 41/2014/TTLT-BYT-BTC, Ho Chi Minh City Social Insurance outlines in Guidance 1744/HDLS/BHXH-GDDT the validity period of health insurance cards for students as follows:
- For primary, secondary, and high school students (except 12th-grade students) and university students (except final-year students): The validity period of the health insurance card corresponds to the chosen payment method.- Specifically for 1st-grade students born before September, the card is valid from October 1, 2017; if born after September, the card is valid from the beginning of their birth month (October 1, November 1, or December 1, 2017) until the validity period based on the chosen payment method (can choose to pay for 13, 14, or 15 months).- For 12th-grade students: The validity period of the health insurance card corresponds to the chosen payment method and the card is valid until September 30, 2018.- Final-year university students: The validity period of the health insurance card corresponds to the chosen payment method and is valid until the last day of the month in which the academic year or course ends.- Renewed health insurance cards are valid from the next day of the prior health insurance card's value. In case of interruption of not more than 3 months, the health insurance card is valid from the 1st day of the payment month.- In case of first-time participation or non-continuous participation for more than 3 months, the health insurance card is valid from the 1st of the month following the month of health insurance payment.
